Due to my crazy work hours, Friday or the weekend would be the only time.
I will be home Friday installing brake pads (if Doc's available Friday for me to pick them up).

Well, I did better than I thought yesterday. Still sucked.

I came in 10th out of 35 in PAX time. Beat all the BS and STU cars except 1 (out of 5) Times up at http://mbrscca.com/modules/myiframe/...php?iframeid=6

I still felt crappy out there. And my best run the timer didn't work! Had to rerun.

Oh well.

Jon, you can pick up the brake pads Friday night, but you gotta have a Guiness with me!

Nice job working in the Talladega Nights reference, Brian.

I'll be out there Sunday AM. Should finally be able to run with the new wheels.

Meh, it's only a tranny, right? Trust me, I was in the same place as Brian, not just at an auto-x, but at the dragstrip and on daily driving just completely frustrated with it. But who knows, I may have broke his tranny

the synchros are kinda hosed on that car. Of course I'm gonna be pissed about it. You can't sit there and tell me you wouldn't be pissed too if your gears were slightly grinding even with the clutch all the way in....

Remember, I go out there to dick around and have fun. To be honest I could care less about autocross. All it is is dodging cones in a parking lot.

I lol at the people that get so serious it's their life. And the funny thing is, the more I go out there and dick around and just goof off, the better I do. Last year if I didn't miss so many events I would have taken 1st in street mod with the focus, but I ended up taking 3rd because I didn't have enough events for points. I have better things to do with my weekend then fetch cones and drive around in circles in 1st gear.

I still come out because I got to know a lot of cool people through NORA, and I like to fart around in the car for a little bit. If I ever took autocrossing as serious as some people I know, I would kick my own *** in a heartbeat.

Now, road courses on the other hand.....

It was a "brisk" morning here in Canton - so much so you could see your breath and amb. temp read 47.

Got me thinking:

When would / are you going to put on your winter tires if you have them?

Or if you don't drive your 8 in the snow: when are you going to put it up for the winter and switch to your winter car?

I think I'll do my brakes when I switch to my winter rims and tires.

Best guess. Late October?

Any chance it could be something other than the actual syncros? Tranny Fluid? Clutch?

My car will be driven as long as there is no chance of snow. As soon as the snow starts coming and sticking around I will garage it. Which reminds me...one of these nights I need to start shopping for that winter car I keep talking about. I can tell you that last year I had my 8 out during that first freezing rain/snow storm and it sucked. Even with traction control I was fish tailing a little under normal acceleration. With your drive I would wait for that first snowfall before I swap the tires over.

I garage my 8 the first weekend I have free in November. believe I drove it a few times before putting it away for good on Thanksgiving. I have my truck parked next to my 8 starting the first weekend in October so I'm able to swap at a moments notice.

If you aren't planning on doing anything with your 8 in October then I would change to your Winter tires the first weekend you have available. There's really no reason not to and we've had plenty of years where the 'first snow' ended up being a pretty bad mix of freezing rain and snow which, IMHO, is the greatest need for snow tires. Also that mix can come at night when you don't have the option of not driving your car home (well you might but it depends on where you are).

Winter tires are fine for regular driving. Usually a little louder and a little less effective in the rain but otherwise they'll perform well enough.

Whats your Budget? We'll get you something fun!

I think Late October will work pretty well. The tread compound on the Blizzaks isn't designed to be used above like 55 degrees or something.

Before I start a new thread with this on the forum. Does anyone know how to carpet a speaker box? I've never done it, and while it doesn't look complicated at all. I has some questions.

Anyone who could point me in the right direction would be good. I searched all over and any custom DIY thread just assumes you know how to do it.

I don't know whether to fold the material into the box and mount the sub screws through the fabric or mount the subs flush and then cut the material around them... its hard being so stupid about this stuff.

I don't want to use carpet though. I was thinking like a Vinyl or something of that sort. Give it a cleaner finish.

If it was the clutch the rpms would skyrocket and the car wouldn't go anywhere. The clutch still grabs hard and doesn't slip.

Tranny fluid is all still there, so that may not be it it.

I've noticed this on the street under spirited driving conditions too.

I've had bad synchros in cars before (stupid Ford cheaped out and put single blocker ring synchros instead of dual blocker ring synchros) and this is the same thing. Cluth all the way in, high rpms under heavy load, and even with heel-toe rev matching it grinds as you put it in gear. It's not like a grinding like "Whoops I let off the clutch too early" but more like a muted grinding that you can feel through the shifter. Unless you've had it happen it is hard to explain.

Normal every day driving and even 1/2 to 3/4 throttle it is fine. I can run it to 9k and not have an issue. Once I go WOT though is when it happens. Sooooo, the problem isn't bad yet, but synchros don't fix themselves. Eventually it is gonna need fixed, because it will only get worse.

FWIW I did read in one of the bazillion threads related to tranny fluid that there is a type of fluid that is significanly better for the syncros. I guess that the OEM and Redline MT-90 is fine for daily driving and even track driving but the abuse that gets put on the syncros downshifting for AutoX, especially between 1/2, isn't necessarily well batched with the two most popular fluids.

I'll try to find the tranny fluid recommended but there were reports of people having syncro problems who swapped to it and the problems basically went away.

Edit: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...=Redline+MT-90

Apparantly the Tranny fluid I was thinking of is BG Syncroshift II. That's what Jax_RX8 recommended and what some people have reported as helping if the syncros are starting to go.

It's true that their Mazda dealership was new; the service bay had not yet opened. Are they still shipping you over to the Ford quicky-lube for oil changes? I agree with Steve that an oil change is not rocket science, but I'd still prefer that anyone turning a bolt on my car knows the difference between a rotary and a snow-blower engine.

I ended up striking up a service relationship with Medina World Cars and have been pretty pleased so far. In and out quickly, inexpensive, and much shorter drive for me.
Thanks for the welcome Machiavelli! Bass's service department is fully functioning and we do all the oil changes within Mazda (between mon-fri till 5pm). Oh, and if you want to msg me with the last 8 of your VIN, I'll see if I can get the original window sticker for you. Let me know.

Personally I would like to spend as little as possible. Right now I am eyeballing a Jeep that is across the street for $2800...but I would like to go lower.

you normally glue the carpet down and cut it to fit the hole with glue and be held down by the speaker. And you do realize that when I said you should go carpet it is a special really thin almost felt like carpet...right? I can see it now...the first **** carpeted speaker box. :P

Sweet, thanks Ryan. I'll give it a try, hopefully I can get it and do a flush before Sunday to see if it helps. And yeah, basically the 1-2 2-1 shifting is what gets it. As you know, the gearing in the 8 doesn't necessitate the use of 3rd at and autocross, so I couldn't relate to that one.

Although I have got a little ermph from 3rd at WOT on on ramps and whatnot

regarding tires... keep in mind, Ohio hasn't really had bad winters in the past couple of eyars except in mid-feb / beginning of march. We've barely had snow even on Christmas.

I had a set of Eagle GT all weathers on my other car and they were just fine. Dont think it's worth getting truly dedicated snow tires like Blizzaks unless you are in the snowbelt of ohio or further north like canada, Michigan, etc... Where you and i are Vyn, if it's that bad out we actually "need" snow tires... just stay home. LOL

I ran through the heavy crap that we got in feb/march with a set of Avon 550 MS on all 4 corners, and never had a problem. I did get stuck once, but I was being an *** and was doing donuts in the one parking lot in heavy snow and managed to bury myself in.

Nope. The 8 is the worst car I've ever driven in the snow with the all seasons that were on my car before. 1/4 inch of snow and the 8 doesn't move.
I'm not being over dramatic here either. I lived right between Buffalo and Rochester for 4 years and got hammered with snow. I know how to drive through it... but the wrong tires on the 8 will make it impossible to get anywhere safely. Even 95% of all other cars would be fine.

Ask John about it too.

The first thing I got for my 8 after I bought it was a set of snow tires and 17x7 rims. Used from a guy in Indianapolis for 450 bucks. I just had to pick them up; which I didn't mind because it was an excuse to take my new car on a road trip.

When you say 'flush' you mean you're going to completely replace it?

If you're just doing the tranny it's pretty quick and easy. Diff is more of a bitch because of the way it's wedged behind the exhaust pipes. Make sure you pick up a set of crush washers from your dealer before you do it - sometimes they have to order them. I didn't replace mine but I probably should have. Besides that just the normal rule about making sure you can loosen your fill before you take off your spill nut and then keep your fill on while you open your spill until it is done coming out - and THEN opening your fill to finish. I jumped the gun on opening my fill at the end and the freakin' stuff came flying out. Spilled pitch black tranny fluid all over.

And like you said if the syncros are gone then they're gone. This is just a band-aid tho it may make it better for now and prevent it from going completely bad for a while. Just make sure you get it replaced before your tranny warranty is done (I keep forgetting to check when that runs out...)

And if it makes you feel any better mine is rough going from 2nd to 1st. No problems anywhere else and it doesn't grind - I just REALLY have to force it at anything over 15 mph.

Looks like Beth is in second place after the first day of Nationals. Nice work Beth - even if you are cheating on your 8.
