If you're just doing the tranny it's pretty quick and easy. Diff is more of a bitch because of the way it's wedged behind the exhaust pipes. Make sure you pick up a set of crush washers from your dealer before you do it - sometimes they have to order them. I didn't replace mine but I probably should have. Besides that just the normal rule about making sure you can loosen your fill before you take off your spill nut and then keep your fill on while you open your spill until it is done coming out - and THEN opening your fill to finish. I jumped the gun on opening my fill at the end and the freakin' stuff came flying out. Spilled pitch black tranny fluid all over.

And like you said if the syncros are gone then they're gone. This is just a band-aid tho it may make it better for now and prevent it from going completely bad for a while. Just make sure you get it replaced before your tranny warranty is done (I keep forgetting to check when that runs out...)

And if it makes you feel any better mine is rough going from 2nd to 1st. No problems anywhere else and it doesn't grind - I just REALLY have to force it at anything over 15 mph.

Yeah, just gonna do the tranny. I don't have time for the diff as of right now, considering the location and all, lol.

As for the synchros, I know it's just a temp fix, and to be honest, it's just to get be through the remaining track dates for this year, then come winter time I'm gonna take the car to the dealer and have them fix the synchros and ****.

As for the warranty, the car is certified, so all internally lubricated parts of the tranny are covered to 100,000 miles. At least I have that going for me

Dont have time? 30 min, go to Valvoline with 2qts of each fluid and you're done. $50 out the door.

Don't anyone pull the "Real men change their own fluids" garbage... 50 bucks and get both swapped out, no fuss, muss or mess to deal with and it's 30 min at most. Not having to deal with the prep and clean up, the time saved, etc... it's definitely worth the $$$.

Call me cheap, but after spending $40 on fluids, I would rather not spend an extra $50!
This is going off of the recommended Redline oil, 2qts for trans and 2qts for diff costing $10 per bottle = $40!
Swapping the oil is super easy (as long as you can get your car lifted and leveled).
A funnel, long tubing, and a friend (someone to hold/watch below and someone to pour) is all you need!
But... to each their own!

I've always changed my own everything on all my cars, right down to clutchs/flywheels/cams/turbos/engine swaps/differentials/brakes/springs/dampers.... And considering that $50 could be put in the gas tank, I'll do it myself. Plus I don't trust anyone to work on my cars, unless it is warranty work.

The 8 is the only car I take to the dealer to get my oil changed, just so they have it on record in case something were to happen to the engine. I could easily prove that all regular maintenance has been performed on the car in case of failure then, hehehe.

I'll be out of town that weekend. So that isn't any good.

It would be on a Sat at the end of October. Some of you will even have garaged cars at that point so I dunno.
Ashtabula is a haul - and I remember some snow on halloween in recent memory in NE Ohio. (Not that snow would stop me) So maybe before then.
October 10th or 11th?

Wasn't your first trip to a 2nd rate shop with me last weekend? Those Monroe Muffler guys seemed legit . . . oh wait, they just had a lift and we didn't.

Yea... chalk that one up to cruising the forums after class when I'm tired.

I told you guys I suck at reading these forums. Hard to remember what you read and who said and if it was quoted.

Update on the exhaust though: It seems to be leaking a fair amount where we slipped the old stock gasket in the front. I'll get a new gasket and install it and see how that does to help.

The sound is awesome, but that hiss of the leak so of spoils the fun.

I'm sure the torch didn't help with the gasket material either.
I'm still thinking that the gasket is what we smelled burning (it was a unique smell).
The cat does get hot, but you had that torch on for a long time.

Like I said before, tell people the hiss is your BOV!
Good way to pick up the chicks!
At least it'll be easy, just remove the three bolts and push the whole exhaust back to remove/install the gasket!
I just wish that the mid-pipe had a section sticking out of the flange just enough to "hang" the gasket on.
Just make sure you don't pinch the gasket between the flange.

Finally got everything worked out for my issue.
Will swing by Doc's on the way home from work tomorrow and install the pads during the day.
Jorge (Jedi54) is sending me a rotor, so I'll be installing that next weekend.
I'll take more pics along the way and I was thinking of making a DIY for a seized caliper float.

And I STILL don't have my 22" Acer monitor that I got from Woot!
I had to send it to Acer (and pay for shipping).
Tracking shows that it arrived there yesterday morning!
Now I have to wait.......... on this stupid 17" CRT!

Yea. . . that smell stuck around until about Tuesday night. A cross between burnt sugar and burnt hair. It really smelled bad.
And apparently my handy torch work put a hole in the heat shield too... So if I ever re-enter the atmosphere in my 8. . . I'll burn up.

Thought about getting a larger gasket to pinch in there... I could always just weld it. But I think that's a bad idea. CEL is on now too, which to me means the pipe is working.

DIY for the brake Caliper would be a good effort. A lot of DIYs are written for when everything goes exactly to plan - so its good when there is something out there for a rare fix like that.

I agree.
DIYs are a good thing to have, but you really need to understand what you are working on so you can point out anything wrong if/when you encounter it.

Quick Question - Do you need upgraded endlinks if you purchase a racing beat rear sway bar?

I've read in the past that some have experienced bad endlinks... but mostly due to installation error.
I guess you could get upgraded endlinks to be safe, or maybe ask around the forum and see how many people have the RB rear sway bar and what they've done.
And since some people post their mods in the signature, find people who have the RB listed as a mod and PM them.
Its best to hear it from the horses mouth.

Not sure but I thought people bought the upgraded ones to let you use the full range of that particular sway. Don't think you have to get them but without them you're only getting so much from the RB bar.

Why go RB anyway? Progress FTW.

I'm sponsored by racing beat apparently.

Jon noticed the upgraded spark plug wires this past weekend. (Which I thought were just red for no reason - another mystery of a used car with random crap done to it)
Got a closer look, they're the ultra's assembled by racing beat... to match the revi intake, "cat" back exhaust, gauge pod. . . and the sweet racing beat rotary oil cap.

No, I am just comfortable with their products I guess. I wouldn't be opposed to others. but I still must consider $

RB is good stuff. You could do a whole lot worse than having a Racing Beat RX-8. They almost always put out a quality product at a reasonable price.

Just realized we passed the Twinkie folks in posts. That puts us behind the Chicago boyz and girlz. 600 posts behind their lounge and just a measily 2500 posts behind their meets.

Even if not being first means we're last I think I'm content with second place.

Make all you people who store in the winter cringe... took this last winter on my old tires on my way up to Cleveland... I was very scared that if the snow stuck I would be S.O.L.

Whats crazy is that you actually took your focus off the road to grab a camera and then proceeded to take this picture one handed.
