Nope, They go on the 40th. I don't plan to drive it in the winter, but they're on it for those "surprise" days of sleet we get. Both cars go into storage mid Nov. Then it's the pickup for the next 5 months............

oil light?

Hey guys - clicked over to 50k on my trip to NY. No problems with the heater, but there are also no climate control ***** for the 8 on ebay. I suppose I'll place a WTB request on there.

Anyway - On the 5 hour trip, I set the cruise to about 77mph. After about 40-50 min at the same speed and RPM, my red oil light would come on. I checked the oil before I left (though I am past my 3k miles for oil change, but the royal purple is still clean and hardly any oil has been used) ... Oil pressure steady at about 65psi # 4k rpm. Coolant at 190 and oil temp at 180 (All normal levels for as long as I've had the car)

So, dropped it out of gear and started to pull over... during the slowing process back at idle engine speed... light went off. I pulled over anyway, oil level was fine. Probably about 1/8 inch from the full line on the dipstick. The same as when I had checked it before I left.

Same thing in about 45 min... oil light... dropped the rpm to idle speed... after 10 seconds of that: light went off.

I searched a little bit and can't find anything pertaining to this problem. But temp is fine, oil level is fine, oil pressure is fine, and the light always turns off if I drop the rpm for 10 seconds. Weird.

Thoughts?

Hey doc, you don't want to try your hand at ice racing on the NY finger lakes? Come on, it'd be fun (i'm told)

Yes. You're low on oil.

Are you saying you haven't added oil in 3k miles? There's no way you're 1/8 off the oil fill line if you haven't added anything. You're going to go through a quart every 2000 miles regardless of your driving habits.

I think your dipstick might be a dipstick.

So... i'm only low on oil after 45 min at highway speeds? But when I stop the car, check the oil, its back to being ok.

Checked the oil after the car sat for about 5 hours, oil level still fine.

If the oil is actually low... it would be low regardless of speed and duration at that speed. I'm pretty sure I'm reading my dipstick correctly.

It is really sensitive to going a set speed. It didn't happen when I was driving through buffalo which varied from in the 50s to 80ish... but back setting the cruise at 77 it happened about 50 min later...

I'll add some oil today and see what it does for my hour trip to Berea on Wednesday.

There is a oil level switch in the oil pan.
This could be giving you false readings intermittently.
As long as your visual indicator (dip stick) looks OK, you should be fine.

Yea...I'm with Jon on this. I might take it a step further and try and drain your oil and see how much comes out. Maybe something happened where it isn't actually getting out of the pan or something. *shrug* Im car stupid so I could be totally wrong...but it is a though.

You still didn't say when you last added oil. Don't add any today randomly or else you'll risk putting in too much. Make sure you can tell what's in.

Do you have the new dipstick or the old one? The new one I believe has a series of lines on it and the old one, which I have, just has a fill and an empty line. It's really hard for me to tell where my oil is at using it because it's permanently discolored and I change my oil too much so it isn't that dark.

If you're under warranty, check out this TSB:

BTW... I'm #48 in the 3rd wave of people receiving their BHR Ignition System.
Ray told me that they are in the process of building/delivering the Wave 3 batch.
Wave 2 will ship one day after getting the terminals and Wave 3 probably about 5 days after that.
So Ryan... I would think you are in the 3rd wave with me.

Jon: this looks to be exactly what it is. 77 mph is a little lower than the 4500 rpm stated... but - close enough. My Vin is in the ranges specified also.

How do you know if I'm covered under warranty still? Wouldn't this fall under the warranty extension mazda just put on the drivetrain?

I added oil on 10/12 because it was the weekend of the winking lizard.

I'd put a call into a dealer and simply ask them.

"Hey Mazda Tech Guy, over the weekend this kept happening. I did some research on it and found this TSB which seems to describe exactly whats happening with my car to the 'T'. When can i bring my car in to get this fixed?"

That's what i did with my headlight and i am getting a new light instead of them just resealing the crappy discolored light i currently have, which i've heard of dealers doing instead...

I believe the warranty extension applies to the engine and transmission. this should be covered i'd think... but then i've seen dealers (not mazda mind you) really nitpick a warranty to death so... I really like the mazda dealership on S. Arlington, Park Mazda. They are pretty much no-nonsense and easy to work with. Being in Canton, they aren't too far away for you to go. Not sure how happy you are with what may be closer to you in Canton but they are definitely worth the drive i think. 330-645-7275 is their number if you want to call.

Good luck!

Sweet. I haven't PM'd him. Figure he's swamped right now and I'll get 'em when I get 'em.

woohoo! new passenger headlight!

Also, ran into a local RX8 owner at the dealership. Has an auto lightning yellow 8. Said he's registered but rarely comes on. Invited him to stop back and joinus next sat if he was interested.

Hi everyone, its been awhile since I posted but I thought I'd share the drama. I left the shinka at cascade mazda to have the moonroof guide rails and interior temp control fixed under warr. just recently. what should have been a simple task exploded into some newbie ripping headliner and roofing mechanics completely out then reinstalling the guides incorrectly. Having a new set overnighted and ripping everything back apart to fix it. After 4 days dropped off my (KIA!!!) and picked it up to find grease laiden hand prints across the entire perimeter of the (almost white) headliner. I ran back inside and left a message but never got a reply. I finally called 2weeks later and ron told me when the thermostat control comes in they will send the car out for an interior detail. So I'm on week 3 and nervous someone will halfass the cleaning job degreasing my headliner or ruin the fabric while scrubbing it. I can't wait for all the problems that arise later from having it ripped down twice. Who knows what's loose underneath! This is definitely the wrong time of the year to have only cold air coming out of the vents! Also, anyone know a good detail shop?

WOW... I would ensure that dude doesn't touch the car again.
Haven't been to Cascade in over a year... that's crazy to hear.
And we can mark off another for RX8 owner who had their control **** broken.
At least you didn't have to pay $40 like some people.

that sucks Rex. I've never heard good things about Cascade. Call up Park on S. Arlington and see who they use for interior detailing. every now and then they send out fliers to their buyers to take their cars in to be done. Special pricing and all that jazz. Bought my last two cars from them and never had a complaint. Got my shinka from the park mazda in wooster, also really good but that's a heck of a drive for you in hudson.
