I just moved from Houston to Omaha, my rx8 got slippery on the Highway 75 last night. Luckily there was no car beside me I am alive. And I could not climb the hills to my apartment, either. I had to park my car somewhere else.
I found some comments saying the even snow tires can not help RWD rx8 on snow and chain tire is illegal in NE I think. So is there any better way or I just need to change my tire. I am renting a SUV to drive right now. So folks please share some suggestions.

 

Buy some snow tires and you'll be fine. It handles great with the right shoes.

Dunlop WinterSport M3s are what I use and I love them. There are some Blizzaks that are popular as well.

The difference between the summer rubber and wintersport tires is incredible. Even without snow the summers are sketchy b/c they have zero grip until they warm up some. In snow they are useless. Sounds like you found that out.

dmc27 is right. I'm in Chicago and I use all season tires. Some are better than others for deep snow. But, the major problem with summer tires are that they don't grip in cold weather.

 

Snow tires compound is different so it can still grip in the cold winter weather. They also have very deep treads to increase the grip.

With the mixture of dry and wet snow plus lots of ice I had to get a good winter tire and it really is a night and day difference. I couldn't get my car up the hills around here with my all season's the first year I had my 8. The dedicated snow tire changed all that haven't had a problem. I have Hancook w300 Ice Bears.

 

This will be my second winter with my Dunlop WinterSport M3's. I love em. Even with the icy snow this weekend in PA...car handled like a champ.

Well worth the money.

how are the Dunlop WinterSport M3s, when theres no snow? noise,, tread wear, etc?
Or maybe i could use my other car then. like i have been doin for the last 4 years.

 

Shoot, if you have another car just drive that. I'm on the 3rd season with my Dunlops. However I do not commute with my RX-8, thus tread wear is dependent on that and other factors. It's a softer tire so there's much less noise than any performance tire.

 

i do have another car which i drove year round for 4 years, granted those winters were mild. its in my sig.
but starting this winter ill have to go from driving 4 miles to work to close to 20.

 

If you want to keep driving your 8 in the snow, get snow tires. Otherwise, drive your beater

I had absolutely zero issues today (~2-3 inches of snow, very little plowing done) outside of having to wait in line to get past other stuck people, and the drive to work is all hill all the time, from sea level to the highest point in RI. Only had TCS flicker a bit as I changed lanes over the plow drifts or when I Was re-entering the lane after passing a stuck SUV on a steep uphill, after coming to a complete stop in line behind it. Even starting from stopped on the steep hill, narry a flicker of the TCS, just eased the throttle, feathered the clutch slightly and she moved right up. The guy driving the jeep behind me had quite the shocked look on his face.

Tires tires tires. nothing else matters more.

 

My winter tires from Toyo let me drive me Miata in the winter, uphill. Snow tires are more than worth it and you'll see a night and day difference.

also i dont know how these things didnt get a5/5 rating i could drive threw snow so deep that the front bumper plowed the road
