NY Hi From Nassau North

I've finally educated myself enough to commit to an 8.
I really like the R3 but I'm wondering if a GT might be a better choice as a daily driver.

Any opinions?

The first thing I'm doing with either will be to get snows and rims for them. I'm coming off a Cadillac CTS and the stock tires were too exciting in the winter so I went to all seasons so I know the 8 will need snows on all 4's. It looks like they're going to run about 1500 delivered (Blizzak lm-20's v rated, 19" Machined rims and TPS's) is there a less expensive way to go for snows?

Whoah whoah, why 19" rims? Go 17"! There's no point looking cool in the snow, when it'll cost you an arm and a leg!

1- The r3 and GT will both have basically the same comfort around town- the r3 has different dampers and a stiffer cross member and 19inch wheels (which have a lower profile so yes slightly less forgiving), yet I'm 90% sure they share the same springs which is the major factor for ride comfort. I'd say go with whichever you like the looks of more and/or can get a better deal on. The engine is exactly the same in both, so fuel mileage, oil consumption, etc, will be the same.

2- for better snow performance, a narrower width tire is better, digs into snow better. You probably want to get a smaller rim for those (17", maybe 18), save the huge 19 inchers for summer outfitting? Your choice though, just going to be a noticable difference in price. Personally, I like my nice rims on my summer setup and bought a cheap set of rims for my snow tires, I can deal with keeping my O.Z.'s in the shed for a few months.

With good snow tires though, this car is AWESOME in the snow. I will organize a snow driving day this winter...

3- tirerack.com probably has the best wheel/tire combo's, and they will mount/balance them for you and mount TPMS before shipping so you never have to deal with going to a local shop.

Welcome!! Feel free to ask us with any other questions, and come hang out some time

With snow tires, this car is almost unstoppable. All-wheel/four wheel etc. just gives you some help to get going, wet, dry or snow/ice, but, as soon as you're going, stopping, steering in a curve etc, it's the tires that keep you going and staying on the road.

Consumer Reports and the Tire Rack gave the Michelin Ice X the top rating. The Bridgestone Blizzak LM 25 got the second best, but handles better in the dry and wet. I want max. traction in snow and ice. I went with the Ice X and one of the least expensive alloy wheels from the Tire Rack. Regarding size/width, you may have to go with the original equip 225/45 18" wheel/tire combo. There aren't that many choices for the RX 8, but at least you can get the best tire of what's available.

meh i won't say unstoppable.. the snow tires will help, but it still slides its *** around everywhere. i've driven AWD cars like the sti and evos and the 8 is not nearly as good in the snow.. but then again, it wasn't made to be good in the snow its a track bred

hmm i heard the 8 handles extremely well in the snow with snow tires.

it also depends on the driver though.

Your bolded portion and my highlighted portion confused the hell out of me. I didn't know if you were saying the car handles well in the snow, or that regardless of snow tires it won't stop

But the rest of the post with the info on the tires is very helpful. I'm going to rough it out this winter and make sure to get those tires next year.

*edit* fml - quoting a post italicizes the whole post.
