Axial Flow Shifter

I put one in last night before going out to dinner. There is a Huge difference in shift speed and feel. I love feeling a bit of vibration coming from the gear box, it makes you much more connected to the car.

I was driving down 107 last night and an M5 just HAD to try to blow by me. So, I had to respond, I was head to head until about 75 then my automatic speed control unit in the passenger seat went off.

Anyway the M5 guy was POed as well as the speed control unit but I made my point.

Hey how is everything? Once sprintime rolls around we'll be holding meets for sure......but you know how winter is around here, car people go into serious hibernation....

If I had a nice garage and some free time I'd spend all winter doing sick car projects....

Question Infamous Questions: Oil, OEM Tires and Premix in Metro NY

OK here we go.....

Synthetic or not.

5w-30 or not.

The car has 5w-30 synthetic in it now, can you change back if need be.

Oil changes every 3k or what?

What the hell is premix for and should I bother with it?

Tire opinions:

The car came with 3 OEM Dunlops - and 1 Nankang NS-2.
Obviously not a good thing. Two of the Dunlops are OK, so I am keeping them.
The Dealer Purchased to Bridgestone Potenza RE040's for me to replace the worn Dunlop 8090 and replace the NS-2.

Any opinions from LI Drivers on the RE040's? Would it be better to stick with 80 90's? on all four corners? Get two more RE040's?

I have a bit of time as I'm running Pirelli Sottozero RFT's on 17" rims now.

I know there are like a million threads on these topics, my questions are more Metro NY Specific pertaining to our weather (oil) and Road conditions. My driving style is definately on the spirited side, I'm just learning now after a few weeks, that a Renesis can be driven under 4k RPM's.....

i use full synthetic 5w20

mixed opinions on premix.. i don't use premix

oil change every 3000.. but check every 2-3 fill ups and top off if you have to

if you're gonna get new tires, get them for all four corners. falkens azenis are a good choice, i think andrew really likes the RE040's.

How come you have 17 inches? and 17 x what?

17"x 7" MSW Type 14's from Tire Rack with 225/50R17 Pirelli Winter 210 Sottozero RFT RunFlat Winter Tires on the car now.
This is my Winter Set.

That's why there's no rush on tires, I have 4 Factory 5 spoke 18"x8" rims, 2 brand new unmounted RE040's and 2 Dunlop 8090's (mounted) with 13.5K on them. The RE040's are the $125.00 specials from Tire Rack.

Why do you use 5W20?

Double check this, but I've heard that once you use synthetic oil, you should NOT go back to non-synthetic. I'm 5w20 in the winter months (better protection for cold starts), and 10w-30 for summer months.

You should have 4 of the same tires on your car. OEM bridgestones re040 are fine for warm weather high-performance. But they are not good in the wet or cold. finally, they are very expensive...so fine for OEM, but I would not purchase them after that unless you get a killer deal. Tirerack has good deals (especially during the winter) for nice summer tires, relatively cheap. Yes I change it every 3k miles. I dont know about the rules for synthetic.

Premixing is interesting- mostly it's relatively cheap and easy to do. Basically you add a small amount of special, refined 2-stroke oil to your gas. Look at the premix thread for brands/names/amounts/directions. The engine has some failures of lubrication, especially those built before 2009. It's VERY difficult to say for sure the benefits of premixing, and I know of no ACTUAL data about it, but lots of very experienced rotary people do it (I do too) because it seems to reduce wear and probably prolongs the life of your engine. It also seems to help compression numbers in engines that are not quite up to spec.

You NEED dedicated winter/snow tires if you want to drive in any snow at all. I mean even a quarter inch. Or any precipitation at all if it's below 30 degrees. Even all-seasons are iffy. If it's not your daily driver than you dont have to worry about this as much. But you have snow tires already, it seems? thats good, a second set of tires/rims is the way to go, not that expensive and much easier and safer.

I haven't been on in a while, so Happy New Year to everyone. A few updates on what I've been up to:
1. In November, someone must have seen my freshly waxed 8 and really loved it because they left me with a generous gift...they keyed it from bumper to bumper on the drivers side. Awsome huh?
2. On Christmas Eve, I was getting ready for a drive up to NH for snowboarding and to visit my family. I had an electrical issue and had to take a train Christmas day. I hate Amtrak. What's worse is that the dealer wouldn't take my car until Jan 4th. I needed new wires, a coil and spark plugs. After they bent me over for the labor cost ($107/ hour) and over charged me for all the parts, I decided I will not be going to them anymore. My car runs great now, but it sucked paying them almost 800 for not even 300 worth of parts.
3. Not having a clean car sucks. I hate not being able to wash my car every weekend. I need the spring.
4. I have a Fumoto valve and need some help installing it when I change my oil next. If anyone wants to help, that would be great.

I also would like to do this. I was thinking about doing a radiator flush now that I have the turbo on. The tranny fluid was changed to Amsoil and made a big difference in smoothing out shifts. I do feel my 5th gear syncro is bad as I can't shift fast in 5th, I have to let the RPM's drop before it goes in or it will make a clicking noise (not good). The tranny fluid changed helped this but its still there, I would want to use the warranty to get it fixed but I don't know any dealer that would just look a the tranny and forget about that big turbo staring at you when you pop my hood.
