Wow....in 5 hours, no one else posted? Site seems dead today. Anyways, I found an '09 8 here at school and I left a note on his windshield, so hopefully he joins.

Can the cold cause the 8 to go into a limp mode????
I started the car today, normal start, came back 15 minutes later once it was warmed up and found a solid check engine light. I drove for a few feet and it felt like 10hp was moving it.

So i proceeded to do the 20 brake pedal ecu reset. Car drove fine after that but the light stayed on. I went to auto zone and no codes came up from the scanner. Any idea whats going on???

Are you still in warranty? If so, head over to your local Mazda stealership.

You should also get a Cobb AccessPORT, great investment and it would tell you what your code is.

Out of warranty. Ive had 2 Accessport ecu's and sold them both. Your right there great for reading/clearing codes. Ill give it a few miles to turn off before i look deeply into whats going on. Just hoping it was the engine not liking the 5 degrees weather at warm up.

I've found it useful for a lot of things besides just that. Well, if you have no warranty, you can either bring it to Mazda and deal with the empty wallet, purchase a CAP and figure out the code, then see what needs to be done, or deal with it for now.

The most prudent might be bringing it to Mazda

there are people who routinely drive the car when its -30.. so no.. cold will not directly put you in limp mode.

yuppers, that's me. when i was home for xmas i was driving my baby in -20 f weather almost every day. ran faster... colder air allows for more hp.

BUT
my car did a funny thing when i started it and it was colder than about -15. as soon as i put the car in neutral and let it warm up, it would run through a rev cycle? as in, it would rev itself to about 3 k about once a second for five minutes (about). when it got warm enough it would stop revving and run at about 2 k, and then slowly decrease engine speed to a normal of 750 at optimal temp. i've never seen another car do that before. it's kind of unnerving. when it was warmer though, or if i ran it recently... like a couple hours before... it would NOT do this. so i'm positive it was a TEMP issue and not really a MAF issue, like i first thought.

odd huh?

also, for reference, lcd screens don't really work at about -3 deg f... so forget knowing your speed and what radio channel you're listening to, haha.
