yea ... from the technical articles I've read, the intake system is already very advanced, so I do not want to mess with it, esp with potential FI in my future...

I have pushed the car ... just not in the curves as I am unsure of the threshhold and unfammiliar with a rwd dynamic where stomping on the gas will NOT pull you out... PLUS the ice/salt/snow conditions do not really provide an optimal handling environment

BUT as far as NA is concerned is this:
Header back exhaust
COBB
maybe lightweight pullies
maybe underbody braces for body roll and improved antirollbars
engine damper

lighter rims and summer tires and I will be one happy camper

I really can't wait till autox season!

The question is .... can I run a midpipe safely without COBB? I know about the CEL ... but I have seen something about it not being reliable/dangerous
gunrax, can you elaborate?

In the future (in like 1-3 yrs), I will either get an FD or 8.5-9.0 Compression rotors (either Billet or rx7rotors with the cutt-off seal drilled) with custom intake mani and 15+ psi boost ... to hit 400whp ... just hope my rx8 tranny will hold

Oh and flames are awesome too! -> def a big factor in going for the midpipe

this is IMO..........

The Rx8 chasis is 2nd to non. Under bracing for a non race car is pointless.

Just an example.----> for power all I have is a Intake and exhaust... And I have beaten Rx8's with "Pulleys, mid-pipe, intake, exhaust, Cobb, afe SS, better tires, etc" all in the same car and I had bad coils and plugs at the time.

I think N/a mods are a waste of time except for a few. Save your money and go FI when your ready.

I say spend your money on some lowering springs, or just get coilovers and be done with your suspension. And get wheels and tires. at least this way everytime you look at your car you can see your $$$ and it feels good.

^ lol i wouldnt pull into starbuck I would drift around that corner and give the peace sign to the cops...

To sauce i would get some springs and get a cold air intake and maybe upgrade your ignition unless you are under warranty and leave it alone to plan your next move. So you get some suspension and looks if you want to upgrade struts later you keep your spings coilovers are nice but a bitch to adjust. Cold air will give you some sound and some top end and ignition will just make you happy and be good eventually for FI.

I am worried of having problems with my auto-leveling headlights when I screw around with suspension, plus its not practical to have an updgraded suspension where I live because of hills and potholes. Once I move in May of 2011, it will be more than practical

you gotta factor in the driver too ... I don't want to get cold air intake because I am not sure if I want to get rid of VFAD....

There would be hundreds of other people with the same problem if it were an issue (auto-leveling headlight). The geometry of the car changes yes, but when the car is level the rear suspension will settle and the sensor will adjust for it.

As far as practicality, if youre going for looks without sacrificing ride quality you can get always get springs with conservative load rates. Living in NYC and riding on a relatively aggressive spring rate/drop hasn't gotten me into many problems... yet (apart from the dudes in the car wash having to drive my car onto plywood to get me on the rack). Remember this is a sports car anyway, ya can't expect good ride quality to begin with.

you don't have to get a cold air intake, sure.. but im curious why you not want to get rid of the VFAD? its there only for noise abatement, nothing more.

i feel like this guy sounds a lot like me when i first had the 8 haha.. if wanting to do autox look at the rules and the classes and what mods they allow to be in that class then mod accordingly.

Omar this is the stupidest statement ever lol. youre a lot better driver then 95% of the 8 owners we know and that alone is more hp then the little bolt on mods for the 8

I read in this SAE technical article that VFAD = variable fresh air duct ... I am assuming that means variable length intake... wouldn't getting a static length intake = worse? ... btw I strongly recommend any rotorhead to read the renesis article ... I almost **** myself when I did

Bonus question ... I had to pass inspection in PA today and they had my car up in the air .... very sophisticated underneath ... I LIKE a lot

BUT

they tested emissions through obd2 ... did not hook up any sniffers

QUESTION:
I know COBB "masks" the secondary 02 CEL, but does it keep the MIL status from getting triggered ... and does the state OBD2 monitor pass ok?

I think you'll be able to guess what I am getting at...

I kinda know the guy so he wouldn't fail me for visual, but the state obd scanner does talk to PENNDOT (Pennsylvania Dept of Transportation) during the check, so it is out of his hands there...

I have an actron that can simulate the state obd2 check, does anyone here have cobb w/ midpipe? Can I try it out on your car at the next meet (when it doesn't ******* snow for the third week in a row)?

in this case, the variable length intake is the tube that runs under the nose of the bumper. basically, at > 5250 rpm, the ecu will "open" the duct that runs underneath the nose of the bumper to give air a more direct path into the intake. at anything under 5250, the duct is "closed" and air will be brought in the long way. the purpose of this is for noise reduction, that is it. the longer air is funneled the less resonance it's gonna give inside the intake box. so at anything below 5250rpm the ecu assumes you are "cruising" and at light throttle and to make the car quieter, it will keep the duct closed. all to keep noise down. no power gain or loss.

I have passed emissions with my AP map "masking" the CEL. The AP effectively 'disables' the DTC in the ecu so it's never ready/not ready, so the MIL shouldn't be triggered.
I'll be there next week though, so you can verify. Here in NY the inspection machine is also networked to the DMV.

Cobb reflasher is probably amongst the best. There is Int-x, fcon pro V by HKS, and I think a tool by hymee you can use as well? Cobb has been thoroughly explored and has people who actively work on improvement hence all the buzz all the time.
