Yow!
Good luck. I haven't been driving mine much, as we've been making daily trips to Maryland for the past several days for family reasons. Hopefully this weather will change and there will be some nice driving days soon...

You should hear his rendition of "Love Me Tender." It brought tears to my eyes.
Seriously, yes, I have checked it out. Not all the way yet, but it's definatley way cool.
I've had a really hectic week, there's been a death in my family, so I haven't had much time for joyrides. (Plus with this crappy weather, who wants to). Hopefully this weekend I'll get a little stress relief on some twisties.

Rever, have you noticed any change in gas mileage after the battery went dead incident? Does the car still feel more powerful? I'm curious to know, so I would know whether to disconnect my battery or not.
#234
Resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery is handy when you've had a CEL, in relation to an item of the ECU's function that would effect driveability. For example, no reading from OMP/MOP would trigger one hell of a fail safe mode...that fail safe mode would only be exited upon resetting the ECU.
But other than that, if you haven't had any issue with a CEL, resetting the ECU isn't going to do anything. But if you want to try it anways:
1. Disconnect (+) terminal from battery
2. Disconnect (-) terminal from battery
3. Enter car, depress brake pedal for 10-15 seconds
4. Reattach (-), then (+), start up car, remember all of your radio settings, etc, etc.

Well just thought that I would drop in and let you know the latest on my car. During this past week of rain I have had a lot of long starts on my car so I decided to bring it in. They re-flashed my ECU. It was 'J' now it is 'M'. Let me tell you the flash made a lot of changes. My drive is incredibly smoother. I think that this was at the cost of some HP though but it could just be that not having the jerkyness of the fuel map makes me feel this way. I have only put like 10 miles on it since the flash so I don't know if gas mileage has improved.

Can't say much about gas..only drive it like 7 miles home.. So.don't realy know what to say now..but the Service Buliten says all RX8s should have this flash...helps prevent flooding.

Grumble...
I took mine in to Bill Britt today for some unrelated stuff. Let me tell you, their service dept. needs some help.
The car came with a chipped windshield. I pointed it out to the sales guy before I signed anything and got a "We Owe" for a new, replacement, windshield.
The next day the salesman calls back and says that the manager of the dealership wants to try to have it filled before they totally replace it. But, he says, if it's not perfect then they will replace it. They just want to try the cheap fix first. Fine, I tell them, because I still have a We Owe for a new windshield, I'm feeling pretty good.
Well, that was two weeks ago. I didn't realize that it meant they weren't going to order the new glass anyways. So my wife takes it in while the glass guy is there and he says "yup, I can't fix that." No problem, says the wife, just replace it. The service writer offers her another appointment, because they don't have the glass. *sigh*
She also tells them that it's having hard starts (which is true) and that it almost flooded once, while warm (also true). When I look at the reciept it says "VEH Operating Within Manufacturer's Specs" Seems they couldn't reproduce the problem. I thought that customer complaint was enough to get the flash... *sigh* I'll have to print out the TSB and march in there with it myself sometime this week. Too bad my sales guy was on his day off, he takes care of business for me.![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Come on, Bill Britt! Get with it!

Andrew my friend.. Just a small hint.. don't **** off the service people.
Lucky for me, I like my service writer more than I liked my salesman. I would take my service writer out for dinner if I could. But, they also talk to me about people who bitch and moan about their 8's...and flood them or try to get over on them...
Best thing to do is just be nice. Smile..and be right about every thing you tell them.
So far, I have had them warrently allignments (wich is never warrently work), my oil changed many many times for free well outside of the prescribed maintaince..and a bunch of other stuff just for being nice to them.
I just asked the mechanic for a ECU flash..and they did it with the other work like it was nothing.
Oh..Elara...they replaced the speaker in my passenger side door.. no more ratteling.

It really makes a difference with smoothing out the synchronizers. Can't say if it will fix the ice-in-a-blender sound.

This dealership just pulled the same stuff with my wife's new beetle (they're a Mazda/VW dealership). She complains that the speaker is blown. They make a service appt. She brings it in. They "inspect it," say "yep, blown speaker," order the part, then you've got to take it back in.
I'm sorry... I don't live or work next door to my Mazda dealership. It's a pain in the *** to deal with this stuff.
I realize they can't blindly order parts because I claim I have a broken windshield or a blown speaker. But there sure should be a better way than making me wait a week for them to spend 30 seconds inspecting it.
I am also not trying to fool them. I do experience very hard starts. According to the TSB a customer complaining about hard starts recieves the L or M flash. In fact...
"all vehicles with previous calibrations should be updated to at least the “M” calibration level. This includes vehicles
coming to the dealer for repairs unrelated to the no start concern, or normal scheduled maintenance."
No inspection necessary by the techs. They should have known that there was a TSB and applied it as directed! It's their freaking job to stay on top of this stuff, so they should! My being in for my windshield should have been enough to get the flash.
I know I'll catch more flies with honey, I just have a low tolerance for ineptitude.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying YOU are trying to trick them...I am just recounting some stories I heard them tell me.
No reflection on you whatsoever...
MSCREANT- I decided not to have them work on my tranny.. don't want to be the guine pig..
They like to talk about the customers that irritate them. Like, I had an issue with the FORD jerks that blew me off at the same dealer...They still haven't talked to me since the Mazda mechanic came out and showed them the ICE IN BLENDER sounds..
But, I just live by the rule my pop told me.."There are three people you don't want to **** off in life..your doctor..your wife..and your MECHANIC!

Just got my shop manual and wiring diagram. I can deal with the $150 for the shop manual, it is two inches thick. However $75 for the 1/4" wiring diagram manual really hurts!
BTW. Rever, the transmission removal/install procedure is only about two pages, 24 easy to read steps. Do you want me to post them for you?

You can order them through Mazda now. They have been available for a few months now, I just wasn't ready to spend the $250. Ask for:
9999-95-064B-04 RX-8 2004 Workshop Manual $150
9999-95-040G-04 RX-8 2004 Wiring Diagram $75
Try calling Cap Mazda. Also, Rosenthal Mazda sells them on-line at: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...intenance.html
I believe these are the "general" manuals. Canzoomer sells the 7 or 8 detailed manuals, like the Mazda Techs have, on his site.
