You actually did very well consider how much more torque he has with the M3.

What color was it? Yellow? If it was yellow that guy has some mod on the engine, not stock.
Yup... did well..but tourque is a virture that the RX8 lacks..

But, in any case a M3 is not something to play with either..

All you need to do is lighten the RX8 up a bit. Free up some of that torque..and u should see some change.

Hanzo is right. The RX-8 has low torque and gets its power by turning high RPMs. However, you just can't keep the engine running at high enough RPMs all the time. Sooner or later you have to up-shift and drop into a substantially lower RPM range, at which point you are screwed (power wise) until the RPMs builds back up.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the S2000 also has this issue.

Yes the S2000 also has this issue however it has duel stage VTEC which act almost like a turbo charger kicks in first around 6k rpm and second one kicks in around 8k I believe. That is how it keeps it ramping.

So Honda uses the dual stage VTEC to boost torque at several points in the power curve? (never looked into how the S2000 does its thing)

The M3 was a Green one. Didn't sound modded to me. No ricer exhaust note that I could tell. But I did hear his engine roar when I was ahead by about half a car length. Where's my B&B exhaust when I needed it???

Yeah, the S2000 and the older Prelude are the only VTEC that's duel stage I believe. They have a different set of camshaft profile.

I don't know that one. Yeah, they are pretty quick cars. A lighter flywheel will help you keep the revs up and drop less between shifts.

Maybe next time I decide to race someone I need to launch it at 8000 rpm. That way I can get a healthy early lead until I need to upshift.

That would be kind of tough on your transmission and clutch.

Just did some research on Edmunds, the 1997 M3 which looks like what this punk had does 0-60 in 5.9sec, which is exactly the same as the rx8. So technically it'd be an even match up until 60, which was pretty much what happened. But when we hit ~70-80mph he pretty much just left the rx8 in the dust.

Maybe I should call up that guy Selwyn and have him make a custom turbo for my 8.

Well to get back to RX-8s, I got a complete black RX-8 interior (cloth) for 55.00 on Ebay. Why you may ask? In 5 years from now I can put them in and have a fresh interior. Of course the car will only have 6,000 miles on it.

Its not that I do not love to drive the 8 it is just that my office is 2 miles from my house. And on the weekends we use the larger cars for transporting s-loads of kids around. Plus I only work a three day work week. That is 12 miles a week plus a little running around.

I think I might do that if I move downtown. Sell the rx8 and get a bike and ride into work.
