nice places to drive around the new york area?
and I'm talking about around NYC/tri-state area or even somewhere in long island. I'm looking for some roads or highways that would be nice to just cruise with the windows rolled down. Or even twisty backroads where I can test the handling of the 8. So far, the only scenic place to drive is the belt parkway for about 30 miles... and we're lucky if there's no traffic but for the most part, its heavily congested till hours after rush hour.
I've been trying to find sites containing information about scenic driving areas with cool twisties and such, to date no luck. Perhaps some of you guys who live around here know of some places to go and be awed.

I used to live on Long Island for 19 years. Probably the best roads are Northern State Parkway and parts of Sunrise for fast stuff. The county cops arent super **** about the speed limit. Just be sure to have a radar detector on for those rogue state troopers.
As far as twisties go, nothing beats the northern end of long island. Endless miles of twisties in the extremely wealthy areas. Not only is it fun to drive, but there is a ton of scenic eye candy. Try Port Jeff as a starting point. North Port is also good. Some of the roads can get kind of narrow so be careful.
Its very hard to get lost as well. All ya gotta do is head south until you run into a highway or ocean

Crusing in NYC highways :p, thats funny. IF you can avoid traffic (thats a big IF) and don't mind about the gas prices, then try the LIE, southern state pkwy, northern state pkwy (belt pkwy is OK, until you get off the exit to Van Wyck, coming from west belt pkwy, where you have that 360 turn. Now THATS a nice turn. Just watch out for idiot drivers...recommended speed on the rx-8 80 mph :D)
Other than those, nothing else. Now if you really want twisties, I highly recommend going upstate. Just came back from there this weekend. Let me tell you, I made my friend crap on his pants. We went through the backroads to get around places and EVERY, I mean EVERY, single road was a twisty. Post sign was LEFT 45 mph or RIGHT 25 mph or S 35 mph. But there's one that I think NYCers should try, 9N palisades pkwy going to Bear Mtn to West Pt. You get scenic view + lots of high/low twisties (I thought I was playing Initial-D!)
Was thinking of getting a whole caravan of 8s to take that route (and others). 100% ppl would love it.

Yeah up by West Point is awesome - there's all kinds of great roads up here...especially around Bear Mountain. I live about 15 minutes away from West Point, so I could tell ya some good spots if you were interested in coming upstate.

Any of the Northern Parkaways would be great. The Taconic State, Saw Mill & Palisades Pkwys are a few that come to mind. I traveled the Taconic my whole life and the stretch through Putnam County is awesome.
FYI..The Bear Mtn Pkwy gets way to curvy, no matter what car your driving. The other pkwys I mentioned have nice curves and you can do it at crusing speeds.
