Possible Drag Strip in LI!
Im in the Architecture Program at Farmingdale State College and for my building codes class my professor had us visit a town board meeting in Riverhead and someone stepped up to make a proposal for the new use of epcal in Calverton which is the abandoned gruman factory and runways. The gentleman wants to use it as a drag strip and says he has a couple in Florida and else where so he made his point that he knows his stuff. He mentions that this would keep a great amount of people from racing on the streets and race on the strip instead. He also mentioned that there is the national cemetery nearby and is more then willing to have multiple sound tests to see how much of an affect it would have on the cemetery.
So he mentions that he will use the abandoned runways as an official drag strip and to have events and races one of which that caught the attention of every rebel and spirited driver in the room was "beat the heat". With "beat the heat" you can race against the cops where they have tuned up cop cars to race with! Now tell me, who doesnt want race against the cops and woop some a$$?!?!?!
With this everyone in the island wouldn't have to go to Englishtown all the time and can go here as well. The members found it interesting but at the same time they said that they would have to get their priorities in order and that they would give this great thought due to the great possiblities of expansion of businesses in that area. They did assure that this will take some time due to protocol, studies, and paperwork that needs to be done and followed up with. They estimated about 18 months which is expected for anyone who is filing for a use permit especially if it gets this heavily involved with testing and research of the site.
Thought I would bring this to everyones attention since its just pure awesomeness! :D

This is great news but it's probably not going to happen. I know the guys that are really pushing this but the town residents do not want it. It sucks having to spend $200 in gas and tolls to race your car and Englishtown for three passes on a test and tune night but please keep me informed of anything you know.
Can you tell me more about the town board meeting and how things went? Positive, negative?
Thanks,
Anthony

The meeting went well and they were listening attentively but they were making it as clear as possible that they have other priorities ahead of his project and that doesnt mean that they will neglect it. They just said that it will take some time between paperwork and tests of the site and area for permission of use. They were a little thick headed when they asked "Oh what will this do for the tax payers?" All the guys in the class were bugging out like bro this would bring business and people to discover this area unlike many who havent ventured further than past the nassau/suffolk border. However, the gentleman who proposed this project provided them with the rite information and research for them to consider it and they did aknowledge and appreciate it and for that they won't toss this to the side which is good lol
