Question Questions from a stick rookie!!!

wass good!!

As some of u know i just got my rx-8. ITS MY 1ST STICK SHIFT CAR. ive driven it for like a total amount of 4 hours??? lol. im still practicing my 1st gear i dont stall out but i take a lil long to go, and wen i switch gears im not smooth alot of times. you might be wondering: "didnt he post that he beat an s2000?". its true but racing is no problem for me, its just driving normal i have a hard time with. lol. so if u got any tips or comments please post them. and i have some questions too.

ROOKIE QUESTIONS

1. the rotary sound is very different from a normal engine rite?
2. wen i have the heater on and im gettin air from outside is it supposed to have a small oil type of smell?
3. what should i look out for?
4. am i stupid n really slow? (mind that im new to this!)

good lookin out

1. yes
2. the smell is normal, and has nothing to do with heat. it'll go away in a month or so
3. let it warm up, and don't stall it out. just watch your rpm needle, if you see it heading toward zero, push in the clutch and the gas
4. you'll get the hang of it

5. if you beat an s2000, it's because he wasn't racing you

hmmm all our sounds are different, most of us have upgraded midpipes/cats and aftermarket catbacksetups and intakes which make everything sound different. rotary does have a different sound and it can be projected a little more with some selected stuff i.e racing beat.

go to the dealership, theyll fix it for free.

flooding.

search.

Wow, great questions.

1. Actually, the rotary sounds exactly the same as a normal engine. There's no difference...mainly because even though it's called a rotary, it still has 3 pistons in the 'heart' of the engine. These pistons will be used when the Mazdaspeed RX-8 is released. Therefore it sounds exactly the same as a normal engine.
2 The oil smell probably means one of the three pistons in the rotary engine aren't firing correctly.
3. You should look out for Kia's (in general). They are very dangerous.
4. Stupid n really slow all depends on what scale you are being graded on....

My g/f wants to learn to drive stick... on my 8... I laugh... I learned to drive stick on a 1990 Geo Tracker when I was 17... taught 2 ex g/f's to drive stick on my old E36 Bimmer... just take your time... drive it everyday... try to stay out of traffic and situtations that might make you nervous... and one day it'll all kick in...

As for beating an S2K... I ripped one on Myrtle Ave in Queens a couple months ago... and yes he was racing... and reving... but maybe he lacked the *****... who knows...

^ it's true, I've taught a couple people in my 8 now.

1. yes

2. I have smelled it too, I hope it is normal

3. stare at your feet the whole time to make sure you are doing it right

First gear, go to a parking lot that is relatively flat, stop and then slowly, very slowly let the clutch out. as it starts to engage the car will start to roll and with no gass will keep moving at about 5mph. it isn't the best on your clutch, but won't kill it either. the point of this is to get used to where the clutch engages. after you think you have a feel for it start adding gas. and keep practicing until you think it is getting smoother, then take it out on the streets again. This may be a very beginner style approach, but it will help you make your shifts smoother and as you get used to it you will be faster.
When you are shifting to other gears, second can be just as picky as first, so don't feel bad about that one. 3-6 you just need to get used to after driving awhile.

4. I would say no. I only had a few hours in a couple cars drving stick before I went to buy my 8. It took me about a month to get really used to driving stick and making it smooth. There are still times that a shift will be a bit rough, but hey, no one's perfect

Keep driving and you will get used to it, it will just take some time.

Oh I can teach her properly... just not on my car... she wants to pick up 'a little something' soon in stick... then I'll take all the time in the world to teach her...

getting the car to move from a dead stop in 1st was tricky for a while, a little too much and you'll over rev and feel silly. Too little and it'll start to bog down. You'll eventually be able to sense how much throttle and clutch is needed, and can make adjustments on the fly if you misjudge. It just takes time.

Also, if you really want to be able to shift nicely, look into getting the AFE short throw shifter. You'll drop the time it takes to move into gear by 2/3rds with it.

Totally agree about the AFE short shifter, Great product and not horribly expensive.

make sure u warm the car up before for a good 5-10 mins before you go anywehre.. god forbid u start up the car, put it in first and stall out.. then you got a flooded engine and that sucks .. so0 let the car warm up before you drive her.. not just when ur learning stick..but everytime..its better for the engine, plus ull get better gas milage haha..good luck with the car tho! u live in queens? i used to live in south ozone park.. i live in oceanside now on long island..right next to valley stream kinda

1.) To me a rotary sounds a little different but I guess its all in the person. Even people on the road are confused when they hear it but then again I have the MS intake and exhaust.
2.) I have the same issue, there isn't much to worry about. Usually after the car is going for a while the smell goes away.
3.) HILLS! If you can find an area with not a lot of cars and practice taking off going up hill. This will train to you make FAST and correct shifts. To me thats how I learned because if your too slow you will drift backwards and possibly hit something.
4.) No, Not everyone learns to drive a stick. BTW kudos on getting the manual over the auto, you will be MUCH happier.

Every engine will have a different "note"

Smell is normal and will go away IF it's brand new.

Practice in a parking lot or somewhere w/no traffic, preferably w/some slight grade to the surface, so you can get used to the difference in downhill v. uphill launch.

j67345 is dead w/this: "Stupid n really slow all depends on what scale you are being graded on...." lmao!

oh, and otherside is old. hahahahahahahhahaha!!!!
