Street parking and dorks using the "feeler" technique..

Okay so I have to street park my car 3 times a week (the rest of the time I have a driveway). I get to my car yesterday and my front plate is crushed from someone backing up into me while parallel parking. I know this is just one of the things in live we have to accept as New Yorkers, but what do you guys do to prevent this as much as possible?

I'm thinking of jigging up a long orange plastic stick to my rear and front bumper so people can see my ride from their mini van and SUV windows....

put tow hooks in both the front and back so when they hit you it puntures thier bumper causing much more damage to them for thier stupidity or lack of concern.....i have a friend who lives in manhattan and has had his car hit so many times his bumper looks like garbage on a 6 month old car......

I saw a Ford Explorer back into a Camry in Boston over the weekend. I then thought to myself: Note to self - never bring the nice car to Boston.

I would be entirely too paranoid to park on the street where you have to parallel park.

Maybe we need to do what the Japanese DMV enforce..you want a driver's license? Pay $5000 to go through driving school, and at the end of that, if you can pass, you get your ID. It is pathetic how we have sooooo many drivers out there that can't even parallel park, let alone just backing out in general!!! I used to own a Nissan 240SX, and in ONE year, got backed into 4 times!! We are not talking about little damages, but 2G's worth!!! My driver side door got collapsed pretty good, rear side fenders, bumpers, front bumper..my GOD! That was in a small city with a population of 150K..multiply that by X factor when in big cities..well..lets say I can understand why you get the damages you have..sorry to hear that though..it would **** me off too..freaking people like those need to get off the road and back in how to parallel park 101..

I can't stand people who do that. If you can't see get out of the car and check. I used to be a terrible judge of distance in my old car but I'd never hit someone's bumper. Thankfully now I can see and judge better but regardless. If I saw someone do that to my car I'd chew them out and ask for their insurance to fix my bumper no damage or not.

Yeah...unfortunately, MOST of them were hit and run cases..one old geezer was riding this extended van. I was sitting at my part-time job, looking out and admiring my car, he walks by, got into his van, backed up, and immediatlely, I knew he was going to hit it, because he was steering the van like my car (which is next to his), wasn't even there! He collapsed my driver side door, looked around frantically to see if anyone saw him commit the crime, and when he thought he can get away with it, had the nerve to straighten out his van, and started to back out!! I was so @#$ pissed off, I literally jumped over the counter, ran to the front door, and glared at him. He then asked, "this your car?" If I had the brain, I would of just jotted down his license plate, waited till he left the scene, call the police and report that he commited the crime...*sigh* Long story short, over 2K damage for that alone!! Lets not forget about the other times..

I park in the city all the time. I go to school up here and parking is scarce. Ppl park with a 2" clearance, and to do so they are banging the living hell outta your car. I tap a car when parking once in a blue (like twice for a whole year), and its not like im banging there **** its a small nudge. I seen ppl going 3mph into someones car man. Its bullshit man. I drive 7 days a week so i see this **** all the time. PPl should learn to respect there own cars cuz there banging it up, and then there messing other ppls cars at the same time.

STORY TIME:

A girl in front of my school in harlem was parking a HONDA CIVIC in a parking spot that could fit 2.5 cars!. She didnt need to parallel park, but she did ? Dunno why, and when she pulled up she hit my girls truck. Pretty hard, so i got out and was like wtf. SHe was like sorry lloll.

I get back in and boom again, i was like wtf she parked like 3" off my rear bumper and she got a spot for 3 cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. So i got mad and i checked the clearance of my bumper with her hood. I got in my girls car and went in reverse (needed to get out since there was a car in the front) but i went the extra mile and put da trucks spare tire in the the front of her HOOD, dented that **** off i laughed and drove off!

Yes im a dertymothafukka
Learn to drive ppl , seriously

Yo especially where you live 416 ppl dont know how to drive man! hahah ya know why lol.....

It sucks parking anywhere in NYC, bunch of doody heads!

(Now I'm trying to figure out a way to use one on the front, too.)

The Rx8 has those 2 tow hooks that are a piece of cake to install. Simply flip open the plastic piece in the front or back and screw the tow hook it. Anyone that backs into you will hit that first before touching the paint. If I remember correctly, it sticks out a few inches past the bumper.

I also like the hooks idea, so four.

I would go for New Yorker's thingy (Though the link seems dead)
I've seen em on cars in the city and they look tough and thick enough to do the job.
Only problem is they might encourage people to not worry about hitting your car.

Maybe cut a hole in it so you could have your shield AND lance

I swear Anthony has got some brilliant ideas! I can't wait to try it at home tonight... Any change that this may screw up the frame or rebar in the case of a hit? I have to see...

Americans, for the most part don't give a dam about their car or yours. I have had my co vehicle and my wife's car hit in a parking lot with me in the car. They open their door and whack, and then it's "Oh, I am so Sorry". In Europe, especially Italy watch an Italian get out of his car next to another car. He will put his hand on the door to protect his car and the other car from getting nicked. I have seen it time and time again. I'm paranoid about leaving my RX-8 in a lot, and will park it at the end next to the walk where I am protected on one side. People just need to care more, and think a little. enuf said.

Get real! I had some Beeyatch slam her door into mine while I was in it, and she just walked away! She had several kids with her who at least had enough conscience to glance back with a guilty look on their faces. But no damage - otherwise her van would've been toast.

I'm sure glad I live in suburbia. When I go somewhere, I can generally take a really crappy parking spot, do a little leg work, and then come out to see myself boxed in by other people 200' further out than anyone else parked. Anyone ever notice that? It's like people want to park away from other people but at the same time they don't want to park alone.

I was at a bar a few weeks ago, and I parked in the empty lot across from the bar and I was the only car in the whole lot, then when I walked out to my car, somebody had full on hit the front end of my car. They broke my bumper in 3 places, and cracked my grill in half. Needless to say there was no note or anything, man I was pissed. But I took it to a pretty good bodyshop and they color matched my new bumper perfectly and even installed my new foglights for me. Nobody has respect for anything anymore. Another quick story, I work at a Lowe's, and I was walking in to work one day and I heard this loud crash, I turned and looked to see a big *** Escalade back into an older Corvette, and the lady driving it didn't even flinch, just drove off like nothing happened. I wish I could have been closer to see the license plate, because the vette was pretty mangled.
