Clown man, is your car new? If so, you can get the NJ 4-year inspection sticker (aka. new car dealer sticker), so no inspection worries til then..
As for laws:
NJ allows your REAR windows tinted to any %.
There can't be any tint on the front windows or windshield. (stupid law)
For the % numbers, limo tint is considered about 20% and lower. 20% light transmission, basically. 5% is about as dark as you can get.
I had my rear windows tinted to 35% using 3M ColorStable (charcoal color). I left my front without tint until I got my license plates and the inspection sticker. (see 1st pic)
Afterwards, I got 50% tint with 3M Crystalline (LCD screen light distorting-like color in day, charcoal when no more sun) for the front windows and windshield. UV protection and heat reduction were very important to me so I got everything tinted, though not legal. I was going to get 70% but the tinter (who was very very good) told me his batch wasn't up to spec. No regrets though!
I've attached images so you can see how dark these are. Even with the differences with the grades and color shade, the front and rear blend in very well and although this sounds contradicting, my front doesn't look like its tinted dark in daylight (sunroof and large windshield help this).
Hope this helps.

If you want dark but not limo, get 10 or 15%. I have 20% but you can still see through.
But for some people, they say 20% is dark. WHICH IT IS, at night. In the daytime, at most angles, you can still see through the car.
My DD has 20% all around. At night time its nice but i wish i would have went 10%. I might go 10% on the FD.

I have 50% all around, 3M Tint. Have a cop friend who says 50% isn't noticeable unless you're in cloudy conditions, even then, you can clearly still see the person head. It is a shade of grey.
I think the inspection station will pass a 50% tint, its barely there unless theyre super ****. But i have a friend who does inspections at his shop, not too worried about passing inspection.
35% Tint all around seems to be mildly dark esp on dark color cars. That's like minivan rear windows tint. I think from what i remember, there is 5%, 20%, 35%, and 50%. The higher the number, the lighter the tint.

I have 20% all around on mine and I think it looks pretty dark. I personally wouldn't want anything darker cause our windows are so little. But anyways... I'm in Jersey 5 days a week and have never been stopped (maybe Jersey cops have a thing for blondes? ) haha But anyways, a friend of mine had really, really, REALLY light tint on her front windows... you could barely tell it was even there. She previously lived in VA where her tint was OK but when she went to get her car inspected in NJ, she got a pretty sexy "REJECT" sticker on her windsheild! They made her take it off. It may depend upon where you go and who you can bribe but Jersey is so dumb. Good luck!

So if you have 50%, that means 50% of the light is gonna pass through the tint.
And the lowest that i have heard of is 2.5% which is basically black. At night time, i find it hard to believe people can actually see through them. I think that pertains to mostly limos obviously and show cars. Cause i been inside a car that had 5% tints and at nightime, you cant see a damn thing.
It also depends on your interior color. If you have a darker interior, in the day, even a lighter tint can make the overall appearance seems dark. Add that on a cloudy day and it will make it even more dark.
My suggestion is you want to be unseen yet dont want the hassle of cop harassment from the darker tint, at least 50% tint your windshield. That helps alot during the daytime. Even if all your other windows are tinted, the light penetrating through the windshield lights up your interior making the tint basically useless almost.

fyi: tinting is illegal on all windows unless it is stock from factory....
the state of NJ will pass for the back three windows tinted any darkness....
a local shop might pass you if you have the fronts tinted...
getting the windshield tinted is pushing it...
truthfully, get the back done darker then the fronts and you shouldnt get harassed, I have the backs 15% and the fronts 35%...

my random thoughts on this:
as alucard said, if you get the back done darker, but the fronts still tinted. it will look like the fronts are not tinted at all. color is all relative.
also. just go to the inspection on a sunny warm day and put the windows down.

I work in Englewood Cliffs and am concerned about getting stopped if I get a tint that is legal in CT where I live but not legal in NJ. Is this a real risk, or is NJ's tint law only applicable to cars registered in NJ? Apologies if this seems like a thread-jack. That isn't my intention and this seemed the best place to pose the question.
