05 62000 miles what now
hi so I just became the proud owner of a 2005 rx8 6 speed and im super new to the whole rotary game is there anything i should know about owning one thanks.

Welcome, and congratz! Did you get a compression test on it? And do you have any maitinance updates as well?

Do not use synthetic there is a tag that comes on Mazda reman that says DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC OIL. Banzai Racing has me premixing 8 oz. per tank on my rebuilt motor he said 3 is pointless.

As would be gumming up a CAT with unburnt oil sludge, IMHO.

8oz. of oil in 2048 oz. (16 gallons) of gas is not going to gum up the cat. I will add I premix 1 oz. per gallon on my Rx7 13b with OMP removed and cat has held up fine.

Therein lies the key to my statement about over-oiling. Your OMP was removed whereas mine, like many others, is still intact and functional.The premix is solely supplemental.

I removed the OMP on my Rx7's not my 8. Everyone should premix some amount it's just good for the motor especially series 1's. Some is still better than none.

I don't really believe in pre-mixing, It may help, but i guess changing your oil more often is far better. I haven't premixed in the 109k kms I've put on so far neither did the previous owner in 160ks he put on.

Premix, premix,premix. I have easily over a million rotary miles driven on seven rotary Mazdas in street and track driving over 42yrs . I premixed in all of them and NEVER had a single rotary engine failure and all had great compression numbers when I sold them. Over the past four decades , I have learned from numerous Mazda championship drivers and race teams the benefit to premixing, and have followed suit. . I have seen dozens of torn down race and street rotary engines and those that premixed had much less or no wear. For me the proof is in decades of actual use.
As far as the amount to premix, that will vary with the premix you use. A case in point , you use twice as much Idemitsu premix per gallon as the Pettit racing Protek premix. Different formulas.
Both Idemitsu formula and the Pettit racing formula have years of street and track use in determining the right amount of their specific formulas to use. And you would use more premix for track driving than normal city driving. Check the recommended amounts or talk to a club member who has used your particular brand of premix. The formulas vary, even among simple two-stroke oils.
There may be some high mileage rotaries that lasted without premix, but in my experience my fellow RX drivers whose engines lasted the longest, all premixed as well as properly maintaining their ignition, cooling, and exhaust systems. Changing oil regularly goes without saying in a rotary.
Sohn adaptors are great, but just remember if your engine is still under a Mazda warranty, using a Sohn adaptor system and bypassing the stock OMP WILL void your engine warranty. I realize this is not any issue with your '05.

I'm with gwilliams6, I've had 13 rx7's and one 8. I have always premixed, used Castrol GTX and only had one engine die. It had a 160k when it let go and it was from a coolant seal failure which then took out the apex seal, rotor, and housing. It's up to you but I believe in it.

our research is decades of owning and driving rotaries, including RX8s. And BTW both Racing Beat and Pettit Racing use premix in their RX8s and recommend it too. 'nuff said !

Driving my unreliable rx8
Im not for or against premix. Its not for me but i have a sohn and have my omp rates increased by 30% or more in some places.

I wasn't pushing premix but from my experience tearing down a several 13b's and a couple Renesis engines. The engines that had premixed had less carbon build up on rotors. Less apex seal and housing wear as well as less flaking of housing surfaces themselves.

Likewise with torn down 13b's and Renesis engines that I have examined over the years, much less seal and housing wear and carbon buildup on the engine's that had premixed. So actual first hand knowledge, not just postulating. Other RX wrenches I know have had similar finds.
