06 SMART Key Fob not working

Hey guys, extremely minor issue here, but looking to see if there are any answers since I couldn’t find any related to mine elsewhere.

I have two smart keys (flat rectangle discs) that came with my RX-8 that I recently purchased. I replaced the batteries in both of them and while the smart key buttons function correctly (unlock, lock, alarm and trunk) I noticed that the keyless piece that you stick into the ignition does not work, rendering a solid red KEY light on the dash which prompts me to always use the physical key instead.

Is there a way I can get this fob to work without using the physical key on my own or do I have to take it to Mazda and have them reprogram it?

Thanks!

So when you state that the buttons on the Smart Key work...

...are you saying that they just light up the red LED on the Smart Key Card or do they actual effect an action on the car itself. In other words, if you press unlock on the Smart Key, does the car actually unlock.

They red key next to the odometer is present when the car is on. From what I read, if the Smart Key Card is paired the light should be green / off.

The door does lock and unlock with the Smart Key Card, however I cannot use the small button on the outer car door to unlock it. I also can't use the black piece that covers over the ignition to start the car. Instead, I have to use the physical key that slides out of the Smart Key Card to start the ignition.

Have you tested the Smart Key buttons?

Many places like Autozone have an RF tester. You start theirs first by pressing the power on their tester, then press your Lock / Unlock buttons on your RX8 Smart Key.

Did everything work before the battery change in the remotes. I believe the card keys have to separate parts 2 them, effectively a remote and then a NFC transponder that does the takes care of the AKE functions (buttons on the door handles, being able to start the car without the key in it, etc). Sounds like either the NFC transponder has failed (or become unprogrammed) or maybe one of the receivers in the car is having problems, I know the one in the rear bumper is prone to corrosion issues, but I'm not sure if a problem would one would disable the whole system.
