10 years later, finally got an RX-8
I've wanted one of these since I got my licence 10 years ago, and today me and my wife finally went and picked one up. And I love that there is a community dedicated to this awesome car :D

Only one other owner, and seems to have been taken care of.
And thanks, will do. I did a ton of research on care on these motors and am hoping i can keep the motor alive for a decent amount of time

Ran across some issues, the heater **** is funky and randomly starts blowing cold air. And across dips it sounds like the back rear is hitting hard (shocks?)
Luckily I have a 30 day bumper to bumper warranty so hopefully it's a quick fix and that will be the end of that :\

Ok, so I wanted to hear from some other RX-8 members.
Normally when I hear the words "extended warranty" for anything, I snark and walk the other way..
but I have decided to go with a 100,000 mile / 5 year extended warranty for my recently aquired RX-8.
I am paying for the car from a car lot, and intend to take good care of it, but if the unforeseen happened and a seal broke I'd hate to have a yard decoration.. has anyone else had experience with these? It has roadside assistance, rental, towing, and a $100 deductible.
For an 11 year old car with 45,000 (I don't know why I said 47,000 above..) I think it helps alleviate any fear I had regarding owning this car.

How much was the warranty?
My engine rebuild cost me ~$2500 (including shipping, replacement fluids/gasket/etc, pulled the engine myself). That's probably the most expensive thing that can go wrong.

I can't see how this is a money making scenario for them.
The whole point of a 3rd party warranty is the idea that 90% of the people won't need it and won't get a refund (it's the same for insurance).
I'd re-read the terms of that contract very, very closely.

I'd also guess the pro-rated refund is minimal to hardly nothing, but is at least a little kick back.

During the Service Contract Period We will pay a Repair Facility, or at Our option, reimburse YOU the Cost to remedy any Breakdown of the parts listed below, less Deductible:
This first quote at the top of their website page is most disturbing and can go a lot of different ways from their legal point of view. I'm always suspicious of these plans because like many pyramid schemes they come and go and you have no recourse. Here today and gone tomorrow or open under another name, used to sell coupons door to door in my late teens or 20's for a company who did this before the internet was so easily available to do it.
I kept getting feed back from previous purchasers about previous coupons they bought that the garages or stations that were supposed to be honoring them had no idea about it so, did some of my own investigating and found it was a frigging scam so I exited the position before I met face to barrel with the wrong pissed off customer, we were working some questionable neighborhoods as well. This seems to me to be more like the 21st century electronic age version of the same thing. Oh, forgot to mention that I was always suspicious that we would wear official looking shirts with Mobil, Shell or Chevron patches on the chest and sleeves given what day or neighborhood we were working and wondered exactly which company we worked for? But knew it was supposed to be independent of those companies so never gave it a ton of thought but it was always a bit suspicious to me and also contributed to my investigating further.
There are probably legit companies out there but I'd do my due diligence before handing them over $800. I had one such offer in my mail and it only took the guy on the phone about 15 seconds to tell me no coverage on an Rx8.

Meaning you pay out of pocket first and then reimbursement follows so you're in no matter what, and they can be hard to find or get reimbursed from for whatever reason? 5 years is a long time and many things can happen to a company in that time if they even have plans to be around at all?

I too was worried about that quote, I was told that it means if I decide to rush a repair and not wait for approval that then at their option based on their findings they may reimburse me if it turns out to be covered. Now, that could all be mumbo jumbo and they could still pull a slick one over but I did contact BBB and the company seems to hold up their end of the bargain with the exception of if you do not have receipts kept up for buying oil for oil changes and the like they will deny the crap out of it. All in all $800 will suck if something happens and they don't hold up their end but I'm optimistic.

Ok well good luck, if it is above board it'd be worth the piece of mind no doubt and certainly not wishing you anything else, first off hopefully you'll never need it but on second thought maybe a new rebuild or replacement just before it expires might be on your wish list?
One thing I can't decide is whether to follow the manuals "oil recommendation" or go with what I had decided on, they told me as long as I do it on the recommended dates/miles I would be fine and the weight didn't matter.... but I'd hate to be denied because of "improper oil" -.-
The car is amazing, and am loving every second of it. The dealership is taking it on Monday to fix what they think is the sway bar that is making that clunk noise across dips.

They have no way of telling, but I guess with this extended warrantee it requires you to have a record of proof? So that does make it touchy, does that mean you have to have it done in a garage? Or can you still maintain your own fluids and the like and just provide a receipt for purchase?
That clunk is more likely to be the rear end bushings, it floats on 2 bushings on the top that are directly attached to the chassis and they go bad. I have a bad one now on my right rear side and I'm not looking forward to replacing it as it seems to require dropping down the whole rear end just for a simple bushing.
I hate that sort of engineering honestly, if you're going to have a simple bushing that serves such a critical purpose and is so hard to get at I feel strongly that it should be much more durable in design and material. Obviously these are critical as they locate the entire rear end when under load so if they wear your entire rear end geometry is out of wack until you replace them.
The 2 bushings located on either end of the bracket. If you can buy a set of Delrin or urethane bushes for them to replace with instead of more OEM junk (in this case), it'll help the car handle better too.

I searched the forums, and found plenty of information of what to do after a car overheats.
I do plan on getting a temperature gauge for my car in the near future, just bought new ignition coils and performed an oil change so I'm going to let my savings catch back up for a month.
But in the event that I was to notice the RX-8 start overheating, what are the recommended steps to take to prevent damage? I searched the forums but only found information pertaining to what to do about and/or after an overheat. I'm sure it is similar in what would be done if a piston overheats, but is there any other recommendations?
