2004 Rx-8 new motor but no spark
Hello, I am looking for some advice. I think I'm in the right place! I recently purchased a 2004 Rx-8, replaced the motor that was is in with one that has around 33,000 on it. Im about 98% sure I've got everything hooked up correctly. now when i go to start the car it just cranks, but doesn't fire. I've got fuel to the fuel rail. power to the coil packs but no spark what so ever. the bottom of the coil packs look good, no major white spots just slight discoloration on the back side of them. most my experience is with older cars and definitaly not with a rotary. from what I can tell it seems like the ecu is not in sync with the motor. I could be wrong so any help would be tremendous! I've been at this for about 3 weeks in my garage and I'm ready to drive this thing!

The coils could be dead, that's a common killer of engines on these cars. So if they're over 30k miles, replace them anyway.
Also check the cat. The original engine died for a reason and you don't want that reason to still be on the car.
But, it does sound like a timing issue. Check the ESS, it's near the crank pulley. Any OBD codes?

Loki, I will get on some new coils, for the cat it appears to be fine, I've got to finish throwing the rest of the exhaust on as well. and i checked the ess, it appears to be good too, maybe ill check into a new one just in case. and the code reader i have didn't give me any information. i need to find a different one.
Charles R. Hill, I read up on that the other day and gave it a shot, i saw the oil gauge go a little over half way and reset but didn't notice any difference when cranking it over afterwards.
thank you guys for the info and help! i'll give those things a try and see where i stand!
Thanks again.

Whereabouts? I'm located in Colorado Springs, my buddy is down in Penrose. DG is somewhere up in Denver, and I'm the only one I know that has a rotary compression tester as well. I think the Torque app is pretty apt at pulling codes, if you have an OBDII Bluetooth dongle it just connects right to it and gives information. Might be worth looking into. I have a set of "New" Coils (I think.) I'd be willing to give them to you but I'd be afraid of them being **** and ruining your engine as I yanked them off as soon as possible and put on BHR coils.
Try an ESS Reset, get back to us after that.
