2004 RX8 owner
I bought a red RX8 back in 2010. I loved driving that car down the freeway to work and back. I took another job close to home in 2017 and have only driven if a few times since then. I started working from home that spring and barely drove it to work. It has sat in my garage since mid 2017 after I broke the drivers side headlight cover (light still works) and now I am thinking of getting rid of it. I contacted a local Mazda parts dealer and asked if they wanted a running RX8 for parts but didn't get a response. It is still in good shape but it just doesn't get driven. I am wasting money on insuring it while I drive my newer car everywhere now.
Any advice?

Assuming it's good condition.
- Put it up for sale
- Stop insuring it and insure for pleasure use only
- Remove cat. Make flame-out youtube videos.
If it's in bad shape, put ad out on local CL as a parts car.

Not sure exactly what advice you are looking for? Sounds like you should just put it on CL and Facebook Marketplace for sale. You don't mention the miles on it, if in decent shape and running and compression test is OK list it for $5,000 or so.

Compression is OK. It is in better than "decent" shape - except for the broken headlight clear plastic cover.
I just don't have a lot of time to drive or places to drive for fun. Also, we took pay cuts in the May (everyone else was laid off), so there's that...
I will ask the insurance company if they can knock down the coverage price. I just love that car. It still looks great after all these years.

Yeah if you're not driving you can mark it as 'storage' for insurance purposes, and just reactivate it when you need to. It'll be much cheaper.
If it were me and I was done with the car, I'd fix that headlight cover (get a new headlight, faster/easier/cheaper) and sell it. You'll get more money for a car that doesn't need any work than you would spend on a used headlight. No sense sitting on a depreciating asset you're not using, especially after pay cuts.
Any reason you would want to give it up for parts instead of selling it?

I guess one comment ..... if you just plain need the money, totally understand. Or if you want one less toy to deal with/keep up. But otherwise, when once again you want a sports car to style around in, you'll be hard pressed to get something that looks as good or is as much fun to drive for the price you'll sell this for. Just food for thought.
