5 speed box

I am looking at one which has a 5 speed box, which i dont know if it was originally a 5 speed box or had a transplant.

it is said to be an UK spec, which i beleve that it still has the 4 port engine.

i would like to know if a 5 speed box is something to be avoided ? From what i read it should not be an issue. The 8 has been imported to Asia in 2008.

Any info would be appreciated.

Has longer gear ratios than the 6spd, it's eu, uk, japan spec with the 4port motor. Some say it's stronger than the 6spd, I've been driving one for 16 years, no problems until now with a lot of goofing around. People swap it on their fi applications due to being longer. I don't see any problem with it apart from being "notchy".
Edit: Forgot to add that I haven't found a lighter flywheel specifically for the 5spd rx8 gearbox. Yoy have to replace the clutch with a 6spd one to add a lighter flywheel, but you add more MOI as the 6spd clutch is bigger.

hi thanks for the info. Yeap thats what i read too, that they better than the 6spd.

Also that a 5spd goes better with a 4 port engine, while a 6spd does well with a 6 port engine. not sure about that.

you have been hauling it for 16 years without issues !!! It must good then, like any other 5 spd manuals. I was just worried because 5spd boxes for the 8 is much unheard over here.

i dont get what you mean by fi application and notchy. Will try to look it up.

good info about the need of the 6spd clutch, but from the way your sentence sounds, its like the swap may not be much of a difference. I dont get what MOI is. Ha ha, quite a noob when it comes mechanical and its terms ! 😅

On turbo 8s, sometimes people swap the 6spd gearbox to the 5spd having longer ratios, helps to spread power nicely. On notchy feeling, I mean the gear shifting is not so easy going like the 6spd, requires more strength to get it in gear. With the years, I've gotten used to it. Nothing to trouble you though.
Moment of inertia, the 6spd clutch is bigger so it needs more energy to move than the smaller 5spd clutch.
I've seen ppl with 4ports swapping to the 6spd gearbox.
I would prefer a shorter final drive on my 5spd than swapping it.

thanks for the explanation. Yeap, checked out MOI. For drivers like me who mostly drive within town area, 5 spd suits better i guess.
