Anybody have a clue what’s going on?

Hello! My first car was a 2007 RX-8 grand touring edition, (fun fact it’s the exact same RX-8 reviewed on YouTube by that dude in blue) I sold it a year ago and just recently bought the same one back from the guy. I plan to swap the engine with a fresh rebuild and get the transmission rebuilt. It has **** poor compression but the previous owner said he would drive it from time to time and was still a blast.

I want to drive it around just a little bit it has problems starting. When I went to buy it back she was idling fine and would shift into first gear but for the life of me I could not get it into reverse. The clutch also now just sticks to the floor with the littlest pressure applied. As far as it not starting I think it’s a weak battery with the bad compression, we had to jump start it before so I’m thinking about just taking the battery out of my daily (2002 protege5) and seeing if it it’ll start up. But anybody know how I can get the clutch pedal to not stick to floor and get it to go into reverse? I know I’m asking a lot here, forgive me but has anyone here just said **** it and financed a new engine and transmission? I’m thinking of swallowing my pride and just taking a loan out to get it fixed. Any advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all. <3

Well the clutch is not coming back up either because the pedal is broken (common issue in early 8s) or the clutch hydraulics are shot. New slave cylinder might be in order, hopefully the master is OK.

As for taking out a loan to fix a non running car... unless you're just temporarily out of cash (in which case wait for it to come back?), it's a pretty bad financial decision. In the best case you end up paying interest, in the worst case you have to sell the car to pay back the loan and given the market value of old 8s you might still end up upside down on it... your call but there's a bunch of red flags there.

I appreciate the honest response! The master slave cylinder was replaced when I had the car for the first time and the clutch, so probably just the pedal. Just
gonna do more research to get it working and drive it to my pops. His old coworker has an 8 with a good engine and trans it just got wrecked from the rear end. He wants to trade an escape his coworker wants for the 8 and we’re gonna swap the engine and trans from the wrecked 8 into mine as a father/son project. But if it doesn’t work out I’ll just save and wait till tax season to get a fresh engine. LOL! But again thanks for the response!

I think we should reserve comments to car topics and leave the financial advice for our loved ones.

These cars need money to keep them going, more than many others. If you don’t have cash for a new engine, really at any time, you probably shouldn’t have an rx8. That being said if it’s your second car and it can sit while you save up the cash, that works too.

The clutch in a rx8 can be frustrating. Slave and master are pretty easy and cheap to replace. However bleeding can be a problem. If your clutch goes to the floor, probably hydraulics, a leak or maybe air if the master was left dry.
