Best RX-8 Years
Hello there,
My name is Diogo from Portugal.
I'm very interested in buy an RX8 therefore I would like to know what's the best year to buy one.
I've heard that the first models of RX8 had some problems and that the 2006 forward are the better.
How much Km can this car handle? Are them reliable in stock?
Best Regards
Diogo

40th anniversary Edition
Lots of us own series 1 RX8 and love them, but yes the Series 2 RX8 did address some issues with the Series 1 . Two examples: the Series 2 have a third Oil metering line for better lubrication inside the engine (many of us Series 1 owners use premix to address this) ; The Series 2 have better fuel pump system (the series 1 fuel pump can start to fail at 50,000miles or more). the Series 2 Rx8s have the newer "C" ignition coils which should last longer than previous oem coils. the oem "A" and "B" coils lasted about 30,000 miles at best (many of us Series 1 owners have gone to the excellent BHR aftermarket coils which should last a lifetime ). The Series 2 has a new gearbox with new ratios for a better low-end takeoff. The Series 2 fuel tank holds one more gallon of gas than the Series 1 fuel tank. The Series 2 Grand Touring model has a better stereo system and bluetooth and Aux inputs standard.
You may find a better price on a Series 1, but be sure to get a rotary specific compression test done before you buy or else you might have to replace a working, but failing engine at your own costs. Series 2 RX8 may very well still be under Mazda's warranties including the rotary engine warranty. Check this for sure.
All used RX8s have important items that wear with mileage and may need to be addressed like the coils, plugs and wires, cat, exhaust, electrical systems, cooling system, etc . Check this list here to see if the potential RX8 you are buying has these items needed to be replaced at its specific mileage.
Quote:
30,000:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.

Series 2 (2009-2011) are better because of improvements in the engine - they added a third oil injector. Styling is a little different, though, but which you like is a matter of taste.
2006 is a good year because of some small improvements. The washer fluid tank is translucent, rather than black, and they come with a stone shield in front of the AC condensor. 2007-2008 also have those, but 2006 seems to be the one year that doesn't have problens with oil in the air filter if you overfill. But 2007 and 2008 are newer, and younger cars are better than older cars. Also, they'll come with the latest flashes, which were implemented in mid 2006 and mid 2007.
Read the thread RIWWP pointed you toward and you'll have a good idea of how to take care of an 8 for reliable, long life.
Hope you find a good one, and join the Rotary cult.
