Blowing Fuses

Hey everyone!

Back in July the fuel pump went out in my 04 RX8 almost immediately after having my oil changed. After replacing the fuel pump, the car still wouldn't crank. That's when we checked the fuses and noticed the EGI Comp 1 fuse was blown. We replaced the fuse and as the key is being turned over it would blow. After inspecting visible wires we noticed a wire for an after market sound system, from the previous owner that's no longer in the car, and removed it. The car turned over and cranked! After driving to the gas station the fuse blew again... We messed with it and got it running again, drove it back home and the fuse blew in the driveway again.

There have not been any after market work done to my RX8 since it has been mine. The previous owner did have an amp and subs installed but removed the system, except for the wires that we removed.

The car drives, and runs like a champ. Please don't give me a heart attack and tell it's a blown engine, I know it's something causing an electrical short. I need some advice on where to continue from here!

Thanks in advance!!

We already have and replaced them, but when we would pull the fuel pump relay out it would crank for a short time and then blow, even after replacing the fuel pump and EGI fuses.

The EGI 1 fuse supplies the trigger side of the relays and the Evap Pump circuit it looks like. I would disconnect the evap wiring to rule it out.

Does the fuse blow if it is cranking without the fuel pump plugged in? There might be a short in your new pump

We haven't done that yet, but it will crank of the fuse for the fuel pump is out

Cranking isn't your issue....it should crank regardless. The car won't start without fuel though

Does the EGI1 fuse blow with the fuel pump fuse out?

Well the fuel pump will prime, but the fuse will blow for the EGI when you turn the key all the way over.

EGI won't blow when the fuse for the fuel pump is out, and crank, but it will eventually blow after a few seconds or minutes after its cranked or if we put the fuel pump fuse back in.

The rx8 is up and running!! The issue ended up being a short in the O2 censor and a dead battery! After my last oil change as the mechanics took it off the lift they knocked it and bent the censor! Here's a picture of the bad censor! I hope this can help anyone else with a similar issue in their rx8!
