Post boosting a stock rx8?!?!?

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. And the rotary life!. So I have a couple questions what size turbo if I can that is even boost a stock rx8 its got low miles and that's 80k miles. Can I put a small turbo on it? And how much boost can I push? I don't want to blow up my car. I'm mostly looking for the bov sound not a whole lot of power iv always wanted a turbocharged car its been a dream since I was young. Now like I said I'm not looking to use the boost for mad power until I put lower compression rotars in it later. I'm mostly in it for the sound and it do be a daily in the summer its a 05 rx8 help please

These days you don't even need a turbo to get the noise ...

The greddy kit running at 6psi sounds like the perfect thing for you ... But you should do some reading in the major hp upgrades forum

Which I believe is likely a better a option.
Greddy if I recall correctly is a recirc setup and the BOV is not nearly as noticeable as a VTA setup.

VTA BOV on a draw thru system has it's draw backs

You need to do your research and read. And when you think you're done reading, keep reading.

I don't know why you didn't just buy a car with a turbo setup from the manufacture

Due to the design of the side ports in the engine the Renesis has more trouble handling boost than the older peripheral ports. The Renesis is a much stronger NA motor but IMHO if you want FI you should look into a swap.

What would be a good future swap for it

Sure the renesis is difficult to turbo successfully . Which is why we harp on about reading and researching . If you aren't after big whp it's absolutely the best option for taking the car to the next level of performance .

Would it be safe to run a kit at 4lbs of boost? Until the engine is built? It would be a daily until I can afford to build the engine

My personal opinion would be the 13brew swap (rx7 fd engine) which is a swap I am preping for currently. It's arguably the cheapest and easiest to swap in. There are many prefabed parts that allow the swap to be almost "drop-in". That said, it still gets expensive quickly and it is not a typical drop in swap, more like a conglomeration of parts that happen to bolt up correctly. I would estimate the cost at no less than 10k. Mine is at 18k for parts alone, but I prefer buying top notch stuff.

If you are interested in a basic layout of stuff, you could head over to my build thread and download the spreadsheet I set up then alter that to suit your needs.

I have tuned lots of them and recommend 8-9 as the peak boost . All the people that have stuck to that max. (on a solid tune) have had a really good run with the Renesis.
Over 10 psi is where I recommend the engine is built for boost : dowelling + deep rx7style apex seals for starters.
Over 15psi is really pushing things with this engine and if this is where you want to be , you would probably have been better going with the REW swap . And for that kind of whp you need to spend upwards of 20k to get something reliable .

Those that say the renesis can't be reliably turboed either didn't do their research before jumping in or are just parroting what others who didn't research have told them.

Do you want to go in a straight line, or corners? If straight line, Charles at BHR has Nitrous experience. He is who I would contact. If corners, FI. I am saving for a Petit Racing supercharger and engine. I will be saving for awhile.

Of course it's all in the eyes of the beholder. "Reliable" is based on each persons driving habits an expectations. You can turbo a Renesis and get good performance from it, but that build has much less growth potential than is usually desirable.

The truth of the matter is air flows better in a straight line as opposed to being forced through a 2 bends. The reason Rx7 motors are better for FI is that their ports were designed for that purpose. Unfortunately, the Renesis side ports were not, and they build up heat and pressure more rapidly than the peripheral ports. I am not only parroting what I have heard from others, I looked at the builds, the results, the science behind them, and made a personal judgement on which build(s) I think are worth it. If the OP (or other members) choose to not follow my advice, that is AOK. I would not fault them in the slightest. Not to be disrespectful, but I think the OP should decide what he thinks of my advice rather than what other members think of my advice. I maybe sharing information that I heard from others, but that does not make said info less true. Even even it is coming from a less experienced source!

I have no argument with you about the REW having more potential for power .... I actually said as much above . Where I disagree with you is when you imply the the REW is the only way to go if you want a boosted 2rotor for this car. The time that it becomes a good option is when you want to run around 400whp and up on a daily basis . Anything less than say... 350whp...... and the Renesis is not only cheaper ,but better, in many ways!

The OP in this thread wants an affordable boosted rotary running less than 6psi . Do you really think swapping an REW in is his best option ? As someone with a lot of actual real world experience with boosted Renesis I suggest it is, in this case, .................ridiculous.

I don't mean imply that REW is the only way to go for boosted rotaries, nor do I mean to imply that the REW is a better boosted engine. In my opinion it is, but of course it is all based on what qualities matter the most. The renesis certainly is cheaper to boost than swapping in an REW, and in some ways can be more beneficial and perform better than an REW. The REW is also better in its own ways. Some of the technological strides that made the renesis compromise what I liked most about the rotary, thus the boosted renesis was not for me.

It is in my experience that no one is satisfied during the life of their car at one boost level. People's abilities grow and so do their goals. I made the suggestion based on that assumption. I once said that the Rx8 stock power would be enough for me.

*Even if* Yeah I make some typos I meant the less experienced source to be me, not those who I acquired the info from. For example, take the physics of the two engines. I sure wasn't the one who tested the airflow however we can take it for a fact that the p-port flows more volume than the side port.

I am not here to start any wars, just give my opinion to the OP! I tend to be a bit invested in my own opinion, but hey aren't we all? If there was one good solution everyone would do that.
