I got a Red manual transmission RX8 ( 3rd RX8 ive owned, but the first manual trans. i have owned ). and I LOVE it! not going back to automatic. It has a strong engine and only 1 real problem :P. The clutch pedal went to the floor and stayed... already started working on the master and slave cylinder, this isnt what I am posting about today.

my problem is with my 4th RX8. When RED1 broke ( my 3rd RX8 ), I had tax money so I went and bought another RX8 manual ( Call it RED2 lol ). bought for 2k, had 80k miles on it. I test drove it SPECIFICALLY for warm start issues before I bought it. Seems straightforward. I am used to how this car runs and sounds, didnt have any start issues etc.. Bought from a used car dealer. Drove it home ( about an hour drive ) seemed fine for a week or so. Things I have done to it since I bought it ( not due to problems, just new stuff so i know the 'mileage' on these important parts )

- New Spark Plugs
- New Coils
- New Battery
- Oil Change
- New MAF
- Ran a bottle of injector cleaner through ( car didnt seems as 'strong' as my other manual, even beeps at me to shift like my automatics did!? )
- have yet to gut the Cat, but plan on it.

Now, I drove to Tampa and back ( 3 hour round trip ) and it saw some time on the freeway! Handled nice, ran fine. When I got home it didnt want to idle at ALL. Now it doesnt want to start! It sits in my driveway and wont start! sometime I get it to crank and start when it is cold. I can drive it fine! but I cannot take the foot of the gas, if it drops below 1k RPM it will die! And no starting it until it is cool again. I know from the sound and the speed that it still has the old school starter on it ( ordered the better starter, hasnt come in yet ). It just acts like a BEAT UP RX8! even though a week ago it was acting well enough for me to buy what I thought was a nice strong car! Like I said, I test drove it specifically for start issues ( warmed it up , stoped and started it several times before I bought it. )

So I feel the Long trip ( 3 hours ) did something to my car. any suggestions for what it could be? I feel I have addressed anything I could search on this forums for already. It threw a 'Crank shaft position sensor range' error just yesterday when I got it started after 15 min of cranking, drove around the neighborhood and parked when it heated up. I have 3 Crank Shaft Position sensors ( all work fine in RED1 , she purrs like a kitten ). Other than that I am at a loss, doesnt throw any codes. Runs fine when it gets started! Even squeal tires if i wanted, but dont take your foot off the gas at a redlight or stop sign cause then I am STUCK! I even went through a few days where if it stalled ( cause i failed at pressing the Brake and Accel at the same time lol ) then I could sit there for 15 min and it would start again after it cooled a little. Now though, it wont start unless it is COLD and even then it takes awhile. I even want to pull my BRAND NEW spark plugs and clean them incase that long drive.. i dont know 'heated up some sludge and deposited it?! I dont know. But cleaning NEW spark plugs is the next step I am about to go do.. Just incase.

Would appreciate any feedback from anyone. Also, would anything make Crank Sensor error if the crank sensor was working ok???



ohh also, I Dont hear my fans kick on at all.... And I live in Florida! HOT.

BTW, does anyone else have a MANUAL Transmission RX8 that Beeps at them to shift? (just like the Automatic RX8's with their 'speed shift' or 'manual' shifting?) Is that normal?

yes manual 8s beep at high rpm to shift but i couldnt hear mine due to the loud exhaust lol. warm starts are a bad sign of low compression. did you get a rotary compression test?

even my FD RX7 does it, I was surprised the first time too
but for some reason, both of my miatas do not beep
of course those dont hit 9000RPM and 40MPH in first gear

if your fans are not turning on that is a serious problem and could have toasted your motor
with the air conditioner on high, just idle the car and the fans should come on after a minute

Supposedly, all 3 gens of RX-7 and RX-8 come with the beeper. The idea is that the rotary is so smooth, and the torque curve is flat enough that, if you aren't paying attention to the tach, there is a good chance you wouldn't know when to shift.

On most piston engine cars, you would know the redline without looking at the tach when your car starts to shake a lot and/or you feel the torque starts to taper off.

Warm start issues sounds like a typical case of low compression. Ask a rotary shop or a Mazda dealer to do a rotary-specific compression test for you.
