buying rx8 and engine swaps

Alright guys new to the rx8 forums and don't know a whole lot about rotarys so your help is much appriciatted x) Looking to buy an rx8 and having "or doing if they're simple" a rebuild done. Id probably drive that for a couple months and eventually throw in a 2jz or maybe an sr20. Any idea how much that would cost to have done by a certified mech? Id love to do it myself but i don't have the time to get it done by myself with school and work. Mainly just concerned about cost. Would 5k be enough for a decent swap? Thanks guys :D

Welcome.
I suggest you research the existing swap threads for more info.
Read a lot.
I mean, A LOT!
Like eyes bleeding a lot.
Have fun!

If you can't do any of the work yourself, expect to be looking at $30,000, and it won't be quick. This is not a car that can easily or quickly handle a swap. Fitment, suspension, steering, plumbing, wiring, electronics, etc... it all has to be custom. You are essentially disassembling and then completely re-building the front of the car with all custom fabrication.

If you have a $5k budget, that will get you a quality hand built replacement engine from Pettit that can be installed in less than a day.

If you have to ask you can't afford it. Go buy a Supra if you want a 2JZ or a Nissan if you want a SR20.

What they said. If I wanted big power, I would go Pettit and a supercharger, also from Pettit. Not sure the price, but I think you can do it for less than the $20K to $30K range, best thing is call Pettit.

Alright haha i guess thats not an option xD the only reason im hessitent to keep it with the rotary is because i know nothing about them. if i did keep the stock motor and put a decent sized turbo or TT it would that be alright? Also i live in area where it gets uper 90s they're saying 100s this summer but i doubt it and can get to be -5ish in the winters. Would the it start if it was that hot or cold out? Just based off something i glanced at

Turbo.... yeah, That would be your $15,000 budget. You have to assume you are going to blow an engine in the process. Everything has to be exactly perfect or the engine goes boom. These engines don't take turbocharging well.

Frankly, if you want more power, you bought the wrong car. It is a long and expensive road to get more power in the car, no matter how you go about it. It is cheaper, simplier, and far faster to just trade it for something that is more appropriate to what you are looking for.

The Pettit supercharger is no longer available. I feel like I keep repeating that all over this forum,

Even bone stock, the RX-8 is as unique and different as you are going to get realistically. If you have to ask what is involved in a swap and how much it cost then frankly you have no business even considering it.

Well, even better. This really isn't going to be the car for you. Just being frank and honest. Lots of other options that you will almost certainly be happier with and spend less on to achieve the smiles you are looking for.

I sincerely hope you do find the right car that fits you.

The 8 is a unique and fun car stock.
I love mine
Lots of guys track them.
You may like it as is. It's why I suggested you research it.
Read, and form your own opinion, keeping in mind the cautions issued.

Hello. I am also a new owner and new to the Rx world. I may be out of place saying this but I believe the point of buying an Rx is for the rotary and swapping it to a 2jz, sw20 or v8 is something I would never do. I have always loved the Rx and most of the reason is for just that reason the roto . If I wanted an 2jz I would have bought a supra.

I am not trying to tell anyone what to do. I am just stating my opinion.

Probably quite a bit I'm doing a 2jz swap at the minute and I'm at a good 4500 by myself
