Actually good practice to remove battery for storage. Main thing is to make sure car is at least covered and not anywhere small animals can nest in it. Also, make sure there are no mice, they will chew through your wiring.

My friends said removing the car battery can cause problems as some parts might require constant electrical supply. Is it true?

Some minor problem will occur.
DSC will be disabled, fix is simple, turn your steering wheel all the way left then all the way right when the ignition is "ON".
Fuel trim will have to be relearned, you might experience unstable idle, which is pretty normal, ecu will relearn on its own.
Your clock will reset.

Yes, but none of these things do any damage to the car. It's completely safe to remove battery for long periods of time.

Dangerous and costs money in power, could start a fire. Just remove the battery, it's the best option, it wont hurt anything.

We've talked about removing the battery. What about just removing the negative terminal? I'm thinking of taking the rx8 off the road for the winter....maybe 3 months.

Yes. Removing the negative cable is perfectly viable.
