cleaning key fob sensor
So, like many of you, bought my 8, which came with two key fobs, neither of which worked. after some reading on here, i reprogrammed them and got one of the two working. it worked maybe 90% of the time for about a week, then quit working altogether. reprogramming it again does nothing. yes, i have tried new batteries, that was my first step naturally. i have read on here some people suggesting taking off the rear bumper to clean the sensor located there, as this one is unprotected and gets very dirty and stops working, causing the entire system to shut down. I've also read that this only works on older models as they fixed the problem in later ones (mine is 04), so i'm basicly just wondering if anyone else has tried or had any success with this before i go to the headache or taking the bumper off. thanks.

I bought my 8 with 1 smart key fob. I had an issue where I could use the buttons on the fob, but none of the door handle/trunk request switches, or the ignition, would work.
Unfortunately my fob was falling apart, so instead of 500 bucks from the dealer for a new one I paid for a viper remote start/security system for the same price and never got around to removing my bumper to clean. Interestingly though, in the service records the previous owner gave me, this issue had been reported - and the dealer charged about 800 labor included to replace the rear bumper sensor...which clearly broke or required cleaning again.
