@ glan,
What he said. Where are you at? The CAT process can also be easier, if you are on a budget and just want it to work.. You can pull the CAT, chip it out, and put it back in. This is called a gutted cat. The work is not that hard. That would hold you over until you can get a replacement. If you post your location, a member might be able to help you out.

Great. I've had the car 96 hours, and now all I want to do is take it apart. Haha.
But seriously, thanks for the list. I'll get started this weekend.
Quick question, though. I've tried searching, and checked the torque graphs available, and I'm not sure if what mine is doing is normal or if there's something wrong. There are a couple of "surges" in power through the revs. Haven't paid enough attention to the rev counter when accelerating to say exactly where (been too busy grinning and watching where I'm driving), but I'd guess around 4000rpm and again at 7000rpm. It's almost like a small lag, and then a surge in power.
I bought an extended warranty, and it's stock standard, so I'll be sticking to non-invasive mods for now.
PS: It's an '06 hi power MT with 135 000km on the clock. On the 2nd engine. First one was replaced at around 90 000km.
Thanks for an awesome forum and loads of info.
Edit: The air pump is disconnected, and O2 sensor throws a slow response error. Not sure if it's related, but rather give too much info than too little. Will be replacing air pump bearings this weekend and reconnecting.

@ Clint: The surges are the intact tract reconfiguration from the SSV. The tuned intake is changing tune. That is normal and based on RPM. That second one is a part of the "redline a day" protocol to keep things happy (after you are sure of the oil in the engine and overall health). The other link in my sig leads to a to of information.
Welcome!

Awesome. Thanks for the quick response. I guess I'll just have to rev and read more. I think the redline a day might just be my favourite quirk/feature of this car.
The Hemi just loves being abused (within reason and proper maintenance) as well, so I see a trend developing...

I'm starting to think, not " congratulations you got an 8", shouldn't it be, " congratulations you got ate?"
I've had what I thought was an incredible car, for 7 days, and shelled out 600.00 and counting. I'm getting pissed!

Its not paranoia, its 600.00+ bucks two days and 100 miles from purchase, its thread after thread, of people with problems, I just wish I didn't love the damn thing so much, like a bad woman, you love it, even though its gonna cost you!

Yep, you got an 8. But, posting here before letting a shop look at it is usually a good idea... It is not that shops are all bad, but if they do not do rotaries, then their troubleshooting processes are all wrong. What looks like one thing, if it were a piston engine, is likely another.
Please post on the issue in troubleshooting, and people will help...

hirpm,
Yes, I understand that you are having issues now. I was just commenting that there isn't any clue of what the problems are from your other posts. Could you create a thread in the new member subforum about your issues, and we can try to assist?
Yes, you are correct, there are thousands of threads of people with problems. It's the nature of any vehicle forum. People don't come on here to ask for help when their car is running just fine.
MOST problems are due to owner neglect or negligence, or are actually basic maintenance. Since you just purchased the 8, the prior owner clearly didn't take care of it as well as you thought/hoped they did. We can usually help you faster, more accurately, and cheaper than any shop or dealer can, but only if we have details from you.

This is a fantastic thread.
Mines a 192 manual 2006 with 60,000 miles. Car has had no issues in pulling and red lining, however it developed a rough idle 730-850 rpm with intermittent shakes within a couple of months from buying it. I then noticed I was using the clutch far too much to save it from stalling when crawling in traffic in 1st/2nd gear. I bought an OBDII and used torque app, no ECU values at all. My mpg was appalling, in just 50 miles or so I burnt just over a quarter of a tank!!
Reading this thread help a lot and saved me hundreds going to a dealership.
I checked the air filter and underneath the air intake box was a thin layer of what seemed oil in the honeycomb. I think the previous owner has over filled it. I cleaned it up and noticed the oil had splashed onto the filter, so obviously I put in a new one and cleaned all around. I unscrewed the MAF and gave it a spray with carbon air cleaner and put it all back together. Result = idles almost perfect, no shakes and pulls away like new and no/less use of clutch in low gear when crawling!!!! MPG will bound to be better.
I've bought the NGK sparks, leads and Mazda engine coils to replace next week (going to a garage for that). Along with an oil change as I think the overfill has had consequences as it's not burning oil as it should. I'm using Lucas 5w-30 non sythethic (UK based).
I don't race, it's used daily 20miles or so with a redline each day.
I know this is an old thread, but thanks.

If this car holds up, ill keep it for the next 10 years or more.
Well, I'm new to the whole late model car terminology, much less rx8 terminology.
I'm trying to catch up, I have mild mechanical knowledge of older American v 8's, been a settled down married Guy with a Taurus for last 20 years, divorced, time to play with my 05 6 speed shinka, but I don't know the latest terminology, and it appears its an invitation to get slammed!
I therefore will just read learn, but will refrain from questions.

So, my first repairs are done. Coolant light started intermittently coming on. At first I assumed it was the sensor, but then realised I could make it go off by pushing the clutch in and dropping the revs. So the waterpump and thermostat were on their way out at the same time. Coolant wasn't circulating fast enough, was boiling in the engine, and pushing the coolant level up. Luckily I took out an extended warranty. All sorted now.

Hello to all. Just bought an 04 from a 60yr old original owner with 47,000 miles. Slapped a Greddy turbo on it with Borla exhaust and a few other mods. Not looking to do much else to it cuz it looks and drives great. Could use an in dash nag setup though.

Epic. Someone should add the Air Pump Rebuild DIY to this thread. Ive read for days that people are having p0410 issues.
AND, c'mon... any DIY involving skateboard bearings being pressed into a car part is pretty BA.

I thought all of these are in DIY sections, but this thread was a compilation of sorts for newbs. Common things new owners should fix/modify to avoid common issues. I just thought the Air Pump repair would be an asset since its such a common problem, and the fix is ~$5.00
