Step 8:
Block Air Flow around Radiator, Direct Air through Radiator
Fixes overheating, anything related to hot engine, poor AC performance
I did not find a DIY here. And, I do not have any pictures of when I did it. Basically, with the air box out, shove the round pipe insulation into any gap around the radiator that exists. If anyone takes pictures of what this looks like, ideally while they do it, or has a procedure, please let me know. I searched and could not find one.

So Lost. Need Help
I am a 20 yr old with a $5400 hard budget. I'm currently looking at the 6 speed 04 Touring 8 with a bad clutch for $5000. The previous owner has the clutch, but hasn't installed it. I don't have $5000 to blow on a lemon, so I'm not sure what the next step should be for me. The car has hot start issues and the original engine. The odometer reads 111,000. I love cars, I could tell you about pretty much every car since 2001, but I don't have the slightest clue how to work on them or what goes on under the hood. I understand the basics of the rotary motor, but it sounds like a huge hassle and that a normal 6 or 8 cylinder coupe without the recalls and flooding issues would be the better choice. The problem is I LOVE THIS CAR!!!! I remember driving the RX-8 in the old Need For Speed Underground series and that was my favorite car back then. I have two younger sisters who fit well in the back and it fits what I'm looking for to a tee. (Stick, RWD, Coupe, $5400 or less all things considered). I really need help because I don't have a lot of money to put into this car but I would love to own it if it runs well.

Unfortunately, this is probably not the car for you. If the car is being sold for $5000, it probably has major problems besides a bad clutch. Hot start issues are going to lead you down a long and costly road.
Besides the major problems, any car that is 10 years old requires continual work which means money to put into it. In the case of the RX-8, parts are *very* expensive. This is no Honda.
So, your hard budget is below the asking price, you know that the car already has major problems, and the car is expensive to maintain. You're probably better off looking at other options.

Life After 8K RPM....
Not to be mean but an Rx8 don't seem to be the right match for you at the time given your tight budget. Knowingly stepping into an 8 with Hot Start issues will cause you alot of grief.
Parts are definately expensive, it requires maintenance, but its a blast to drive.
You may want to look at rsx, s2k, Accord coupe, Celica, Soalara, eclipse. Also, check out cobalt SS..

I have spent the coast three days online doing research and learning. I had not even heard of the rotary engine till the dealer told me the rx8 I was looking at had one... well, after 3 days of online research and about 27hours ready the forums here at rx8club.com, I am now the proud owner of my own '04 rx8 MT.

Congrats Nailo,
Welcome to the forum.
With any issue's you have with the car, bring them here first.
Did you have a compression test done? What were the numbers?
Give this a read

Enjoy the forum and the car.

I don't remember the actual numbers... I got rid of the page when cleaning out my fiances car. I do remember that none was below 7.0, and I recall seeing somewhere in the forums that that was descent.

Need those numbers because depending on the altitude (above or below or at sealevel) and the rpm the test was conducted at, those 7 numbers could be a failing engine. You need to have a total of six compression result numbers. One for each of three rotor faces on each of two rotors. The numbers should be normalized to 250rpm and sealevel. There is a chart with result numbers, and what they mean, on second page of New Owners thread

@ afed38.
As much as I had to agree with Tanro (not because of Tanro, but because of the message), I think he provided really good advice. If my kid came to me, with your story, i would steer him away. the car is great, I love mine. But, I am able to drop money when it needs it. I am also able to do the work myself and have collected the tools. That clutch install could cost you a grand. The miles make it a bit risky. And the price, for one with those miles, that is a bit high. Hit AutoTrader, find one you can get a service contract on, and see what you can get it for if you must have an 8.
Sorry

I just purchased my first 8. I would like to thank everyone that contributed to post for those of us that have never had one. I've had 13 Rx'7s and still own a 90' vert. It's hard to pick which one to drive on a sunny day. This is definitely a different beast than a rx 7. But I was able to do alot of reading on here and knew what to look for before purchasing. I found an 04' AT with a freshly built Banzai Racing engine only 3k on rebuild. (This car was at Banzai when I took my Vert in for rebuild and then I found it for sale 3 miles from my house weird)New Borla exhaust and magnaflow cat. New MKW 18" wheels and tires. $7,000 at that price it was a no brainer, so glad I didn't run out and buy the first one I looked at that. I didn't know if I would like it after so many 7's but I love it. Thanks again for helping. I would post a pic of it if I could figure out how.

You gonna eat that?

I personally would never buy a salvage, whatever the issue.
Someone else may disagree and see an opportunity to get a possibly good
car on the cheap.

I noticed the link to the owners manual in the first post is broken. I googled it and found it, but in case you want to update for future owners it is: http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/pdf/...004_owners.pdf
