Do i need a tune?

Ive done full exhaust including long tube header, racing beat midpipe, megan racing catback, and am im about to add an aem cold air intake. It already does some funky stuff like loud pops on the shifts but i dont really mind it. Thanks!

I wouldn't tune it just for those mods, but a general tune for increased oil injection, coil dwell time if you're not on stock coils and MAF scaling wouldn't be a bad idea. Along the lines of MazdaManiac's tunes of yore. Not sure it's cost effective, you won't see gains from it, but I like having a good baseline. Do you have other mods planned?

Do you still have a cat? I assume not if it's making pops, but if you do and it's popping that could be problematic for the cat.

With those mods you don't need a tune. Usually with different size intake you would need to rescale the MAF, but the AEM intake is only slightly smaller diameter than stock.
Stock ID = 3.47in
AEM ID = 3.37in

If you can find yourself a good obd reader you should be able to see the MAF readings and the long and short term fuel trims. I suggest checking these and try to aim for a MAF reading of 5.5g/s(1.21V) at stock idle rpm. If this reading is off and you have fuel trims present, there are most likely vacuum leaks somewhere. My fuel trims were originally off by 14% and the idle was super rough, plenty of pops and burbles when I let off the throttle. It also fouled sparkplugs every month. My issue was my Lower Intake gaskets were shot, the elbows infront of the throttle body were leaking, the MAF itself was leaking around it, and a vac line was never put on.

Mazda edit or Versatune still costs around $350-500 I think. Some benefits if you are willing to learn are:
  • ability to turn off dtc codes
  • Increase oil injection
  • Lower fan temps
  • change coil dwell time if you have LS coils
  • increase idle rpm
  • change to a linear throttle map (really smooths out slower speed driving)
  • recalibrate MAF curve and Injectors (makes the engine smooth and responsive)
  • >>after the above, Edit fuel maps (I found the JDM fuel maps are much smoother, but terrible on mpg)
  • >>after the above, Edit timing (not necessary, but give a little bit up in the higher rpm ranges)

Thank you guys for the advice, i have stock coils and ngk laser iridium plugs, ive checked fuel trims and maf voltage all seem normal to me. I did have an issue in the past with loss of power from svv codes but i ran lucas octane booster in the car and that seemed to get rid of the issue havent seen any problems since, i also beat the **** out of it on the track that day. Been running premixed 93 since then. I would like to get into tuning the car im not looking for any significant gains at the moment. Im kinda waiting for the car to kaboom so i can throw a supercharged setup in. Already got the pulleys, and got the manifolds welded!

(edit) no i dont have the cat anymore first thing i got rid of as it wasnt funtioning properly when i bought the car took a chance on it and it paid off last owner was super pissed about loss of power
