Engine failure after rotors bearings change.

Hey guys, Im new on this forum, I own the RX 8 since 2004 without any problem. Until last month when the CEL light started to flash.

Today I finally picked up my car in service after rotor bearings change (took almost 2 months). Coast me 1840$ with all service, compression test, oil change etc.).. After 15 kilometers I was able to hear some resonances but I wasnt sure where it coming from. Ater 20 kilometers of driving the engine made a weird rattle sound (No engine CEL light came on) and after few seconds car stopped completely without the possibility to start again.

Is possible that some apex seal cracked and the rotor lost compression?

Thanks for any info...

They had to have taken the entire motor apart to change the rotor bearings. I would go back to them. If they put it back together without changing some non-reusable parts, that would certainly be cause for reimbursement.

Yes it sounds like an apex seal let go. The only way to find out is to open the motor again (or an endoscope).

Also why were the bearings changed? That's a weird thing to do.

Yes they did, all was opened, replaced, cleared, decarboned... It was the theory of my mechanic (Kamikaze Racing Prague), that found a splinter on the bottom of the oil pan after opening. He also heard strange sound of the rotor when he took his foot out of the gas while driving (like it'd be released) . He said he experienced it few times...

The car is in service again, waiting for opening. I won't give up my car, but such money amounts destroys me

Thank you Loki for your reply. Hope you understand my bad English

You english is fine. I've been to Prague many times, have family there. Even saw an RX8 in 2013, maybe yours!

Ok well whatever they did, they should be responsible for the work. You shouldn't have to pay extra for work on an engine that made it a total of 20km.

Do these guys work on rotaries often? If not, it might be cheaper/faster/easier for them to buy a new engine from a professional rotary rebuilder. I *think* there's one in Poland, and there are some in the UK, and many in the US. It'll be more expensive, but it will work.

When you do put the fixed engine in, make sure it gets new ignition coils.

Keep us posted!

Luckily nothing serious happend Loki, today he called me that the rim fell apart and broke the ground for the coils. It was a question of 25 euros or so. So the engine lives and is strong with compression values around 90psi.

Now its time to hit the road again

Anyway, thanks a lot for all info you gave me!

Cool, good luck. Make sure you read up on break-in procedure after a rebuild.
Wait, 90psi? That's.. not great. Is that at 250rpm? 120 is great. 100 is borderline. I will be a bit low after a rebuild but should climb up. Hope it's just that.
