ENGINE Recommendations for replacement!
Hello you beautiful people. I bought a 2005 Rx8 about two to three months ago and let me just say I’ve never felt so needed in my life by anyone or anything other than my child now A little info on my problem.....
when buying her the people did not drive her as they should have or take care of her, I mean she sat a whole year without any TLC. They got her up and running and I came across her and got her for 800$, with that being said I knew I was going to have my hands full.
Since I got her I have replaced:
battery
spark plugs and wires
coils
alternator
Radiator
cabin air filters
air filter
oil filter
took off the cat
and cleaned my poor SSV
all that just to now be told that my engine has a compression of three and I swear if I didn’t just test it when I got it and she was not that low at all. Long story short I need some insight on what would be a good engine because I was thinking of going the turbo route since the other one is indisposed anyway. Should I try to buy new, rebuilt, or do it myself?
Any information you got I’ll take thank you so much!!!

what who said the compression is "three" that's not the right numbers for a rotary specific comp test. there should be rpm and psi per rotor and face so a minimum of 8 numbers
unless they meant that your normalized number was 3 which is like a seal or two missing
also if you have not yet done so, read the new owners thread and then read it about 12 more times no really read this!
the easiest engine to put into a rx8 would be another renny, all/most engine swaps will be $10k or more and they will still have issues
my suggestion would be the have a remain from a reputable builder and swap the current engine with a good rebuild for less than ~$5k(dealership cost)

Yes I read it and I’ll probably be reading it the rest of my days as a reference guide. Also yes he gave me a rounded number because they all read at about 3. Something and he was the mechanic at the mazda dealership. I still don’t have her back but i had a feeling the engine was failing before I took her to her appointment. I have done everything I listed to my lovely 8 myself so the dealership was my confirmation I was going to need a “newer” engine because she does have some mileage on her. And I don’t have much more I could do for her myself. So I’ve been researching places to go since I’m in Texas, to get her taken care of because she wasn’t taken care of properly with the first family she needs a Chance now. I don’t have any personal mechanic I know here or anyone who does rebuilds so that’s why I wanted input as to if that is what would be recommended so I can get moving and find one.
thank you for the info!

Under the ladder is passing, according to Mazda..
I can share though that I had one that ran around 90 psi (6.3), 3 around 70'ish (5 or so) and 2 at 55 (not even on chart) at 230 or so RPM. The 90 passed by the skin of its teeth. I regularly tracked the car an got 20 mpg on the highway. All was good until I tested things.
I did go for a rebuilt engine, I got one from Pettit (the now offer rebuilt crate motors), and what a freaking difference. You will have to get it tuned if you go the ported route, but I never looked back. I would find a reputable dealer, but this forums determination, and get a good motor close to where you live. A tuned, strong running renesis is not bad. Ride in one before you decide on a swap.
