ESS won't go back together

Doing a battery replacement and cleaning the power steering connectors. While I have it apart I cleaned the ess and now it won't slide enough to click together it feels like the unit has a spring, but it is probably the rubber ring inside the electrical connector. I've tried to reseat it with a crew driver and sprayed it with cleaner numerous times to remove any debris that might let it seat, but it still will not snap together. I've gone through a bunch of the ESS threads and haven't found anything relevant.
Has anyone else had this trouble, and how did you fix it?
Thanks

Did the cleaner you use make the rubber seal swell up??

that's certainly possible, but the only thing i used was electric contact cleaner, which i would hope wouldn't do that. I also used dielectric grease, but not enough to fill it. I tested the contact and it started, so I did a little shade tree engineering and will just keep my fingers crossed.
