Just signed up and wont let me post in proper forum, so posting here.
Yesterday car started a few times with no issue. Never had any starting problems, not even hot start issue. Starter and battey seems strong.
Suddenly today, I turn the key to start, and all instrumentation, interior lights, radio, everything turns off. The engine did not even begin to crank.
Tried taking key out and turn again. Still every thing remaining off. Only the security light is on but is turning off like it should. No flashing.
Tried locking and unlocking door with key. Still same thing.
Then I found that if I disconnect, and reconnect the battery, instrumentation and power to everything comes back on like normal, but as soon as I start to crank I get one click and everything shuts down again. Only way to get things to power on again is to repeat the battery disconnect, only to then have it all shut off again if I begin to crank (no actual crank just a click).
I don't think it’s the battery because interior lights are bright after disconnect/reconnect of battery.
Welcome. This is the proper forum, because it's for new owner questions. Battery/starting questions are the most common new owner question thread started. There are only 3 on the subforum's first page at the moment, but we can see upwards of 10 a day. It gets a bit old
It's the battery and/or the connections. Disconnect as before, only thoroughly clean all corrosion off of the clamps and the terminals. When you reconnect, pay attention to how it's reconnecting. You want the clamps to have a firm seat on the posts before you tighten the clamps. It is entirely possible to tighten the clamps against themselves and not against the posts. Make sure they have a firm and secure seat before you tighten the clamps.
If the problem still does not go away, then it is simply a failing battery (not just a dead one, but actually internally failed). Have it tested at an auto parts store to confirm.
Wow I would have never tried that and ended up towing to dealer. But I did exactly as you said RIWWP and insta fix. Used steel wool to clean and tightened up nice and snug. Thanks so much.
Now here's the crazy part...
I fixed another much bigger problem. My low end power had been sucking. Dealer recently put in new plugs and coils and seemed worse. Well while working on the battery, I had my flashlight looking down next to it where there are 4 big electrical connections, I'm assuming for ignition. The one most hidden was not even plugged in!!! Plugged that in and now the car runs with the normal power it should have... omg welcome back my baby! (I'd have to assume the dealer pouched that up.... idiots)
The coil connectors are not below the battery? They are on the other side of the engine bay, under the throttle body. Still, leaving connectors unplugged is usually not a good idea unless you know exactly what it does and what the result will be (and want that result to occur)
Well the "Everything powers down when try to start" was solved by cleaning/reconnecting battery connections. Too simple!
The bonus fix was discovering unconnected ignition connector (in picture) left that way by the dealer. I'd still like someone to confirm that this plug in the picture is actually ignition, so I can give the dealer a piece of my mind. This has made my low power go away. Surprised it was not even worse that way.
Oh, nevermind, that is the coil connector for the leading plug on rotor 1. That would do it. That's the opposite side of the engine bay from the battery though It's under the intake accordion. That angle threw me off at first.
