Failed Compression.. BUT
Okay, I have on 08, automatic, 69k miles. Took it in to have a compression test..(im at work, get a phone call), the guy says that it failed the test borderline.. BUT, 2 of my spark plugs were not "Leading", so this could throw the test results off. He said to go ahead and bring in the maitinance records, which i should have all my oil change records, as well as reciepts for plugs/coils/wires, a new battery.. O2 sensor etc. How much could not having two of the right plugs affect compression? Because i believe now after i give all records, im going to have to do a retest. Opinions, my mind is going nuts because im at work until they close.

Thats what i was thinkig.. Because he said the next course of action would to get all maitinance records to bring up there. Thats when he stated 2 of the spark plugs could be causing faulty numbers -.-, you think thats for them to try and sqeeze more money out of me?

Called to get the real numbers..
Rotor 1= 5.7, 5.9 and 5.4
Roto 2= 6.2, 6.7 and 6.4
And he says 2 spark plugs could cause incorrect readings like those.. Pff and he said it was borderline passing

At what áltitude and rpm? A 5.4 at sea level only passes if the starter rpm is <170rpm, which is painfully slow.
That engine isn't borderline, it's dead, and the tech is feeding you bs.

I will get that information tomorrow, i dont want to tell you anythibg unreliable. Yeah, it doesnt make sense, to te me to go ahead and get all records, then tell me that about the plugs? Sounds like i might be looking at a new engine replacement if i get approved? Just wondering, ive never been in this situation, if i get approved, what exactly do i pay for? Labor? The compression test? Anything? Thanks

Just be aware that most dealer techs (most mechanics in general actually) are unskilled dolts. At least in my experience anyway. Those numbers are failing, no where near bordeline and like RIWWP said, the plugs have nothing to do with the results. Make sure they give you printed results from the Mazda computer system. Many dealers try and just tell people the numbers, if they did the test following the factory service guidelines (tester interfaces with the computer VIA USB) then they will have printed results.

Brand spanking new engines with 0 miles typically may not pass a compression test, depending on build quality. All engines will increase in compression over the break-in period. Some claim that full compression isn't reached till 6,000 miles, but I expect most of the compression increasing wear in happens within the first few hundred miles, if not faster. Most Mazda remans tend to settle in the high 7s (normalized). Hand built engines from good builders seem to settle in the low 8s at least.
There is no "rule" about it though, like with anything else your mileage, and compression, may vary.

Thanks RIWWP for the info I had mine checked @4,500 miles and both rotors were above 8 on all faces. Banzai Racing does a good job If anyone in the Midwest needs a rebuild. Chris and Elaine will treat you good.
