iv recently bought a rx8 and it seems to be struggling with fuel starvation, the car will rev right through to red line but lacks the power it usually has plus makes a deep borking type noise with a little grey smoke coming from the exhaust, any ideas were to look first???

The fuel pump and filter is one unit located under the rear passenger seat behind the driver. The fuel in the tank cools the pump. Usually, the pump overheats when the tank gets low on fuel and you will have problems accelerating or climbing hills. Filling the tank with fresh gasoline will cure the problem temporarily, but the pump will have to be replaced if this is the case. Engine problems can be created by the loss of fuel causing the mixture to go lean for a short time.
