Funny noise (not the fans) after ignition off
Hi All,
Had my 8 for a few years (previously Rx7 Series 1, and Turbo II conv), and about a year back noticed a slight motor type sound coming from low on the RHS in the engine bay after ignition off. Recently it has got louder, and lasts longer, with additionally a similar but shorter noise when the ignition goes on. I wasn't initially worried since it sounds very much like some sort of actuator, but since it now lasts longer, and seems louder and somhow less 'normal', just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what it might be? I did ask my garage (RX8 specialist), but they say they have never heard it before. We changed the airpump in case, but it made no difference.
PS. I did do a search, but only found threads relating to the fans, which this CLEARLY isn't.
Thanks,
John

There are a number of things that do activate/actuate after key on and after key off. I don't recall them all, but for example ABS cycling is one that happens after key on. I think the EVAP system is one that cycles after key off.

How about telling us what year your RX-8 is?
After every 'Ignition Off' on a 2009-2012 R3 or Series II RX-8 ONLY the two EMOP's (Electronic Metering Oil Pumps) cycle on (buzzing noise) for about 2 seconds and turn off.
Cold starts the Air Pump comes on (whirring noise) for about 20 seconds, these Air Pumps can get noisy with age, the Bearings need replacement.
That should be all the noises you are hearing..

^ More than that. Depends on how good his hearing is.
ABS initializing, for example, is audible if you are listening for it and know what to listen for. Another example is if his normal driving always produces a condition in which his fans remain on after shut off. It may not be "always" from a semantic point of view, but from his it easily could be.

As I said we need to know what series RX-8.
ABS Units are completely different, I have never heard mine when car is stationary.
I do hear rear Calliper ABS initial daily test CLICK/THUD when first moving off @ about 10 kph.
Under bonnet ABS unit is on left side
