Question Gear / Clutch Grinding Noise from N to R

About 20 percent of the time when im going from neutral to reverse
or from first, to neutral, than to reverse, its like the clutch is grinding..? its a pretty foul noise. Nothing 1-6 though. Only when transferring to reverse in a parking lot or something.

How do we change our transmission oil on manual transmissions..? (04)

Remember that reverse is NOT syncronized...so make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor and you give it some time to loose revs before you try to shift it into reverse

There is a lockout tab so you need to push down on the shifter and over to get it in reverse. I have seen people grind into a forward gear because they forgot about the lockout

There's a chance it could be a clutch pedal adjustment problem. Which would go hand in hand with what dannobre was saying about making sure it's fully depressed.

Good stuff guys i appreciate the quick responses, i can totally feel what your saying about letting the revs go down and coming to a complete stop before going into reverse.

No quick question cause i do this all the time and dont seem to have an issue..

while reversing slowly before i come to a stop i kinda just put it in 1st FROM R and slowly clutch/gas so it feels super smooth,
sorta the opposite of what im talking about initially?
it only works one way. Is it bad to go form R to 1st if your really smooth at the transition?

You really should never shift into first when you are moving........... There is really no reason for it....and shifting into reverse will grind as you have already figured out

Have you tried double clutching when going into reverse? Most of the car Owner's Manual will say that if you have trouble going into reverse, put it in neutral, clutch out, clutch in, and then put it into reverse. Worked every time on my old Corolla when I can't go into reverse, but my RX-8 goes into reverse without fuss.

Also, I agree that there is very few situations where you need to put your car into first when you are still moving. Just wait until the car stops. RX-8 at least has synchros for first gear, some cheaper cars don't, and you will grind when going into first.

I think it pertains to our cars a bit. When the gears are aligned a certain way it can be pretty hard to get it to lock into R. This only really seems to happen when the RPM in the transmission drops to 0. Shifting from neutral to reverse would probably alleviate this issue entirely.
