Genuine Mazdaspeed Wing Measurements

I would have posted this in the S1 > Exterior Appearance and Body Kits section but I don't have permission to do so. Anyways I recently purchased an RX8 with a knockoff Mazdaspeed wing and trunk lip. The wing and lip are nicely painted however I don't have any faith in the plastic brackets. I'm wondering if I can swap the knockoff brackets for the OEM brackets.

Could someone with a genuine Mazdaspeed wing please measure the distance of A, B, and C? C is the length of the rectangular hole the bracket comes through (front to back).

they look plenty strong to me and it really doesn’t generate much downforce even at substantially illegal race track type speeds, which of course not because it wasn’t intended to be balanced with a front splitter, only to offset a slight rear lift force effect

If you'd see the brackets bend and the wing vibrating around, you'd change your mind. Now granted the OEM Mazdaspeed ones could do the same, I have no experience with it either.

Well I may have underestimated the turbulence and the rigidity of the mounts too not knowing the actual material. I thought the originals were aluminum. Is that motion due to just the mounts, or is the wing possibly too flexy too?

not sure where you’ll find just original mounting brackets only if they do match up, but possibly I suppose. I would think what you have there could be duplicated in aluminum pretty easily though.

The wing itself is sturdy, but if you try to wiggle it up and down you'll see the plastic brackets will slightly bend at the rear where they connect to the trunk. I've thought about making new brackets out of aluminum but I know they wouldn't look as nice as OEM.

Is that the M1 wing? I just read about it having painted plastic mounting brackets.

Well you can’t buy the MS wing parts separately so I’m not sure what your plan is. I would always recommend searching on here first because there’s 15 years of info and unless it’s something new there’s likely information on here somewhere about it.

I guess its called an M1 wing. I cannot find who made it, could Duraflex or some other manufacturer as there are no markings or anything on it (I removed everything off the trunk). I searched on here before I asked the measurement question but I couldn't find anything about it. I know for sure the knockoff brackets and Mazdaspeed do not use the same mounting holes. I can find damaged Mazdaspeed wings for about $300 but I wanted see about just swapping brackets since my wing and lip are in good shape and already painted.

well maybe I’m not clear on what you’re saying, but if they don't use the same mounting holes then how will the MS brackets be of any use to you?

That's why I requested measurements. Once I know that then I'll know if the brackets will work with the knockoff setup.

I suppose that’s where I was confused because you weren’t specific and only said the mounting holes don’t match up. I suppose I don’t understand why they’d make them match up on the wing and not the trunk, but maybe you’ll get that lucky.

However, you can purchase aftermarket extension pieces that are the top piece, but taller to raise the upper wing piece. They are aluminum, but they’re not cheap either. It would eliminate the flex on that part of the assembly, but how much each is contributing I’m not sure of. If you knew the full MS pattern it’d be really easy to get them laser cut out of aluminum, then bend the ends for the mounting tabs and drill the mounting holes in them.

Another option would be to take those plastic brackets off, give them to a shop to fabricate the same brackets out aluminum?

^^^maybe you should have considered the “read the thread” option first?

I read that he wanted to make new brackets out of aluminum and that he wanted to find out who manufactured his spoiler as there are no marks. Didn't see anything about just taking the brackets off the spoiler and giving them to the shop and having the shop do all the measurements for it.

Maybe its too early for me to understand what he's trying to do but looks like you were as confused as i am.

Guys, I appreciate the replies but you're going wayyyy off topic. I asked for measurements to see IF real Mazdaspeed brackets will align with the knockoff wing on my car. If so I swap the brackets, drill 6 new holes in my trunk (if needed) and put the new brackets in. Capisce?

You might want to reach out to this guy who is selling his Authentic Mazdaspeed Wing. He can get you the measurements before he sells the thing. I wish i could help you but i sold mine a year or two ago.

I thought about it but he isn't in the country but somehow the spoiler is in California. I've asked some people on eBay too but they won't tell me anything until we've, "agreed on a price."

You can see in the picture below the brackets are very similar.

It does look really similar. Mazdaspeed parts are pretty rare so I'm not sure how much other opportunities there will be for others to measure one out for you and rx8club is not the most active community anymore. You may want to think about asking on the Facebook groups or even Reddit as well as they may be able to help and have more activity. I'm apart of the RX8 subreddit and do see some activity there.

it was discussed in post #4 and 5, but don’t bother trying to contact that guy, he’s not responsive to pms or emails, but he’s also overseas and the spoiler listed there isn’t.
