ON Grinding noise / feel when I let off gas to "coast"

Hey there. So to start off I have a 2006 6speed RX8 with about 130k on it.
It's mostly stock and i haven't done anything under the hood...

So basically when I'm driving my car in 1st , 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (not 5th or 6th) and i am accelerating everything seems to be okay, however, once I let off the gas and am just rolling (still in gear) my car grabs and there is a pretty loud and noticible grinding noise that sounds like it's coming from my transmission. My clutch has good response so I don't think it's that.. But basically a soon as I touch my gas the slightest bit the noise / feeling goes away. If I push the clutch in it goes away and if i put it into neutral it doesn't make the noise or grabbing feeling. I replaced 2 coils already but I feel like I need to replace the other 2 because I'm having trouble getting over 6000 rpms and over all just not getting the best response out of my car. I took it to the shop today cause I just didn't want it to get worse and am hoping they will figure it out by the end of the week. I'm asking you guys because I can't even sleep -.- I love my car so much and I treat it like my baby! I don't race it or drop my clutch. I drive it like I'm 96.

Looking for a peace of mind and a solution!!!

Thanks guys!
Caleb.

Didn't someone advise you to change the other 2 coils? Not being able to get over 6000 is indicative of cat failure which will kill your engine if you continue to drive on it.

A shop that knows rotaries doesn't need nore than 10 mins to diagnose that, so if you have it at a random unspecialized shop, tell them to check the above.

I can't help but point out that the help and info you need occurs often on this forum, if you just search.

As for the grinding noise, what kind of history does the trans have? When was the fluid last changed? What kind of fluid is in there? Did it onset suddenly or has it been like that for a while?

So I've already had my cat gutted because 2 coils went before I bought it and lone behold a few days after purchase they went along with the cat. The other 2 were fine (so I was told) I have no idea the history of the tranny I've owned the car for Only 3 months. The guy said he had just did a flush and replaced the fluid and my mechanic told me it was good and had lots of life left. As for if its been happening for a while or not... Well it used to slightly make a noise randomly but now it has grown to happen every time I let off my gas pedal. So I brought it in. Scared to drive it more. And I tried to look for help but I'm new to this club and have a hard time navigating around. I was hoping someone could help.

Sinkas i might need too.. Stressing me out as i am a student trying to make it by!!

Thanks for the help guys

A short video clip of grinding noise would help us tremendously in understanding what the issue may be and help guide you in the right direction.

As far as the coils are concerned, it's always best to replace, plugs, coils and wires at once.

Also, inspect your gear shift boot it may have some holes, covering those helps too lol. It may sounds foolish, but I had this issue sometime ago, and it was not really the grinding noise though.

Worst case scenario, you may need to replace the tranny, good news is, our trannys are not that expensive. A used tranny in good condition can be had for less than $500 plus $300 labour for installation another $50 for fluids :-)

The shop called me and told me they couldn't hear anything. I told them it happens when it heats up so he would have to drive it a while... He doesn't want me to pay him labour just for driving my car so I'm going around 3:00 to get it and I'll drive it around until the noise starts. I'll take a video and post it in here.. He said my fluids are good and it's not that... So I'm thinking def an issue there somewhere. If the transmission needs replaced do you guys recommend somewhere I can purchase one?

Cool. Try to record the sound and post it here when you do that.
Is it a mechanical sound or more like gurgling/popping or marbles rattling in a can?

While you're with him, can you find out how he tested the remaining 2 coils? There is a right way to do it, with a multimeter, and there are other ways that aren't ... right.

Did he have any comments about not getting over 6000rpm? Because that's potentially a bigger issue that shouldn't be ignored.

So the shop couldn't find the issue and I have to bring it back on Monday.... I'll have the car tonight and I'll add the video. And it's def a mechanical sound like metal on metal. Imagine 2 metal plates spinning against each other And yea that's how he tested the coils. He said I need new plugs and wires so I'm going to do that along with a stabilizer linkage that went.

Keep posted!

Thanks again
