Help!

I have a 2005 rx8, i was driving down the interstate and it started loosing power, and shut off on me. Tried starting it again it cranks but dont want to turn over completely. It also has a sour smell. The check engine light, the coolant light and oil light is on. I tried deflooding it but still no start. Im thinking its my fuel pump and/or filter or maybe my injectors. Could any of these be the problem or something else?

Of those the fuel pump would be the most likely, but there are other possibilities. How much fuel was in the tank when this happened?
A few quick things to verify...
- how recent are your ignition coils/wires/spark plugs?
- was the check engine light on before and what code is it reporting now?
- are coolant and oil levels good?
- are both belts still in one piece?
- what's this sour smell? Can you localize it?
- are the spark plug wires still attached to the spark plugs?

I think they were replaced at 113,000 mi. and it has 127,600 mi now. And yes it was on before it quit and I dont have access to a machine to hook it up and no money to take it to the dealership. And the coolant light has been on since we bought it but coolant level is just fine, I think its a sensor. Just put 3 quarts of oil in it today still no start. Yes they are still in one peice. And I think its gas mixed with oil causing the sourish smell. And I dont know exactly where its coming from. And yes all of them are. And the fuel pump sounds like its working when I try to start it, and it turns over just fine but wont start.

And there was about a little over 1/4 of a tank of gas when this happened.

UT Same thing happened to me! Mechanic claims my engine blew....

That exact same thing happened to me and I had to get it towed to a shop. The mechanic over there told me my motor blew and that I'm going to need s new motor now. I'm wanting to get a second opinion but I'm low on dough so I can't really have it towed elsewhere and then have it diagnosed again but I have to figure something out. Mines a 04 RX-8.....
If it is indeed a blown motor, I'm most likely just going to list it online and see if anyone wants to buy the car as is... Hopefully someone in Utah is looking for a project to work on this new year...
I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you're not in the same boat at me friend!

It doesn't really do much. It makes a sound but not the sound of an engine behind it.

Was it 3 quarts low on oil???!!!
Considering they only hold less than 4, then yeah, safe to assume the motor's dead.

It's possible, but is the mechanic basing this on something in particular? A compression test perhaps?

If it's not a Mazda shop, they likely know very little about RX8s and are just guessing. The reason for your trouble could be different from the original poster's here, so I suggest you start your own thread to try to troubleshoot. Fuel pump comes to mind but we need way more info.

He didn't say if he checked it, drained it, or overfilled it.
I'm basing it on oil change amounts, but if it takes 3 qts to even read on the dipstick, doesn't it seem that the oil would get overheated and the engine isn't being lubricated properly?

I thought part of the oils job was to also help keep the engine cool?
How low does it have to get before it negatively impacts the engine?

To be honest, you may need to bring it to Mazda to diagnose. This will likely require tools and equipment. I don't recommend bringing it to a random mechanic, as most don't know rotaries which leads to false diagnoses.

If it sounds like it's trying to start, I don't think fuel is your issue. That said, please localize where you smell fuel from. You shouldn't really smell fuel in the car unless it's leaking out somewhere.

Some things you could try, but no promises. We're following a process of elimination here:
- deflood procedure https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-...lumber-182410/
- pull and examine the spark plugs for oil, gas or coolant. Take pictures and report back.
- get that that check engine code read. Doing so earlier could have prevented the current troubles. Autozone can do that for free. It will help narrow down the issue.
- check the current oil level. If it's over the full line you'll have to drain it or risk further damage.
- check that all vacuum tubing in the engine bay is connected and there are no vacuum leaks
- disassemble the intake tract and clean the MAF sensor. It takes a specialized MAF sensor cleaner.

Can't tell if a coil is bad by looking at it.
Test it.
