Help needed with determining health of engine

Hi! I have a 04 VR 6spd. My engine developed a coolant seal failure about 6 months ago at 137k miles (original engine). I found an engine on Craigslist for $2000 from Japan with supposed less than 50k miles. They agreed to perform a compression check for me tomorrow when I go in. I'm also concerned about the possibility of a coolant seal failure tho. Is there any way for me to test to see if the water jacket seal has failed? Guessing pressure test? Only problem is its not hooked up to a car, it's just the block. Thank you!

Gonna throw in a new rad and cooling fan control kit while I'm at it. Maybe an oil cooler fan.
P.s. for those of you wondering why I don't just go to a verified rebuilder or buy a full new engine it's because I'm saving to get a 13brew conversion so I just want something in the mean time. I do have a secondary car. I have around 15k saved for it so far from the past 5 months. I was quoted 20-30k for turn key swap from force-fed but I'm adding in some oversized oil coolers, a bigger rad, high performance fans, stuff like that. Thanks!

If the compression test is for the new motor, it will tell you if the seals are leaking on the inside. For outside, you can inspect the heck out of it, looking for stains, but that is about all I can think of.
