Hesitation on acceleration. 05 has been off the road for 5 months. Put it back on the road yesterday. Started right up and ran flawlessly. Today i noticed a hesitation when accelerating a couple of times. Drove for half an hour. Parked and went in store for 10 minutes and it wouldnt start. Did the de choke procedure for 8 seconds. Then tried starting it. Started but sounded like it was going to stall so i revd the engine til i got home.
It has 48k original miles. Compression is good. Upgraded starter. New battery. Plugs coils and wires done 15k miles ago. Stored for winter with no ethanol fuel and stabilizer.
Something i just realized. I had the oil changed. Im wondering if they didnt use a long spout funnel, if that could of done something. Maybe the MAF got messed up? Maybe som ething else?

Just verified with the shop they dont use a long stem funnel which i forgot to mention. I remember reading oil can foul up something if you dont use a funnel like that. What does it screw up and how do i clean it?
The overfilled oil happened to me.
In my case as soon as I took the air filter off I saw there was oil in the filter.
Some places just assume it takes 5 qts then check the dipstick.
That's what happened to me, they just overfilled it and blowby forced it into the intake.
If you rely on other people to change your oil
you need to remind them not to put more than 4 qts or do like I started doing and bring your own oil.
It's more expensive that way but at least you know it won't get overfilled.
If you still have issues after your intake is clean you might consider the fuel pump.
I went through 2 in 12 years.
Thanks for that info. The one thing i did remember to tell them was not to overfill but i did double check it... I bring my own oil filter. When i first got the car i met someone on the forum who lived 35 miles away. furansu rebuilt his 8 so i had him do all my maintenence. Sadly he moved to Fla. He showed me dry oil residue in the air tube and cleaned my MAF. He said the previous owner either overfilled it or didnt use a long stem funnel.
The shop will look at it monday. He doubts it would be the MAF. I will show him your pictures. Thanks again.
It drove today without any issues. Im guessing the residue may have blown off from driving.
So i had the MAF sensor cleaned . Was running great then it died again on me again. After a few tries, i got.it started. Im thinking fuel pump. Any other thoughts? Would a fuel pump work intermittently?

Yes it can run intermittently.
Idk about the seal unless they're talking about the fuel ring recall.
If you haven't had that recall addressed, bring it in to the dealer, maybe they'll fix it with the new fuel ring.
Worth a shot.
If your coils are still OEM try testing them out using the link below.
15k miles on oem coils/wires is suspect, as is 15k miles on plugs that have not been removed and cleaned or replaced.
Thanks. I will have them checked. I put C coils in and wasnt expecting issues so soon but will check them. I would be more suspect of the plugs because i changed them a few thousand miles before the wires and coils. And the first set of plugs was showing some signs of issues.
Just wanted to make sure the items you are replacing are being sourced from a vendor that is trustworthy. Had you said some online retailer like ebay or amazon or something, I would have questioned if the replacement components were genuine or not which could have caused additional headaches
Just taking a stab after reading your original post. Have you run out the tank with the stabilizer in it yet? That stuff can cause issues. Its imperative that new stabil be used when storing.
I wouldnt make any decisions until running fresh gas.
Thanks. I have used Mazda occasionally. Here is a question, if it were the plugs or coils, wouldnt it show up as a misfire on the dash?
Usually. But if only the trailing plug/coil is failing you might not register an actual misfire and instead just have poor combustion.
Not starting does sound like fuel pump. But hesitation sounds more like air measurment or delivery. As Team said, the logical course of action is to test each component individually. Can you get a fuel pressure gauge hooked up? If the pump is dying, you'll see it in fuel pressure.
You cleaned the MAF so that's good, I would see if the intake valves move freely. Might need to do a bit of wrenching to get to them.
Coila and plugs can be at least HEI tested before getting into deeper testing. And obviously compression test whenever you find it has difficulty starting warm.
Thanks guys. Every bit of info helps. Unfortunately I am 70 with physical limitations. So any testing will have to be done by someone else. I went to the auto parts store this morning and no codes appeared. I use Pri G stabilizer and it happened after i ran it on the first fresh fillup. I just filled it again so i will see what happens. I had no idea stabilizer could cause problems. At the auto parts store the guy who helped me had an Rx8 and did quite abit of work on it. Fortunately for me, he is willing to work on my car. Ever since furansu moved to Fla, I've been at the mercy of the dealership or a local mechanic. I will try the fresh gas again which is my 2nd refill. Then one by one try all the suggestions here. I really appreciate you guys. I love this car and have done everything to keep it healthy.
