how come..

I see some RX8s have a front lip and side skirts and some dont. Is there certain models that came with it and some dont? Does this mean my 8 is not a GT? After seeing the side skirts and front lip cars it makes me wish my car had them. Where is the best place to buy them? thanks guys

It is the factory appearance package, which was an option for all trims, and was not standard for any trims. Includes the front lip and rear aero flares, does not include the spoiler or any mud flaps.

With appearance package:

Without appearance package:

Very rarely they might be sold here in the classifieds. I am unsure if they are still available through dealer special order, since they were last used in 2008.

No, transmission isn't trim based. In the US, you can have a 6sp in a Sport, Touring and Grand Touring, and an automatic transmission in a Base, Sport, Touring, or Grand Touring. (A Base with a 6sp manual automatically got the Sport package). The transmission was trim based for some other geographical areas.

Heated seat switches just rearward of the shifter is the best way, as i haven't seen them replicated by someone that has swapped interiors though.

(That is actually a Shinka, since only Shinka's got the Parchment interior)

...A Base with a 6sp manual automatically got the Sport package...
That may have varied by year. I've got an '06 manual, and the sport package was listed separately, as a $1300 option, on the Monroney. Sport packages were different for auto and manual. Some components that were part of the auto's sport package (like the bigger brakes and wheels) were standard on the MT, but you had to shell out more to get DSC and a few other goodies.

At some point I think Mazda started to call the base model "Sport," which further confused things.

Figuring out the trim level on a used 8 seems to be fairly challenging.

Yeah, the main switching year was 2005 to 2006, where everything went from option packages to actual trim levels. For an easier time explaining, I include those option packages as part of the trim definitions that were later used. The exact parts of "Sport" varied depending on what they were added to, but generally brought cars to the same point. DSC/TCS isn't part of "Sport", since you can have a Sport trim without either (common for autocross and track)

"Base" disappeared in 2007 or 2008 i think, definitely isn't around for 2009-10-11.

It does get a bit confusing. I can't even try to wrap my head around how they relate to European trim levels.

Yes, if you have heated seats, you have a GT.
