... not likely the heat so much, but the combustion pressure will be WAY higher than just compression alone and likely be much more damaging to the sensor.

Bumping to say I also prefer the spark plug wire removal alternative.
I drive an S2, and the diagram for the ESS doesn't look the same as the S1. I could be wrong, but honestly I never found it despite looking under the car and watching videos. It was a huge pain trying.
So eventually I disconnected both Trailing wires and it worked for the rear rotor, but when I tried the front it sounded like the car still managed to start so I freaked out and killed it immediately. But that brought me to the same conclusion to just unplug ALL spark plug wires to ensure no spark anywhere. Same outcome, no risk to breaking the ESS plastic, or even getting underneath the car. Not sure why that alternative would get so much hate?
