How does the car drive so well having failed a compression test??

If using an analog tester, you also want to remove the Schrader valve to get pulses when cranking. Testing in this way is not wholly accurate and those numbers are extremely low, like the car shouldn't start at all. Possible issue with the tool that was used or the way the test was performed. Ideally, you should be using a rotary compression tool.

Thanks for responding so fast and being so kind with my stupidity. I live in southern Colorado and the closest rotary compression tester that I know of is 4 hours away at least. I was instructed not to drive the car that far because something else failing can make the car worse.
I didn't even suspect a failing engine, no symptoms, I was at the dealership for the airbag recall and figured I'd get it checked.
Totally SHOCKED.
It was many months before it started having hot start issues which slowly got worse until I flooded it one morning and could never get it started again.
I have no good idea of how to solve your problem, but if the seller is in any way trying to work with you and help you work through it, maybe try listening to what he's telling you and try to judge if he's acting in good faith.
In the meantime if I were you I'd start researching the forum for threads related to your issue as much as possible to get a better understanding of what you're experiencing.

This is sort of related to this 5 year old post, but I don't know how to create a new post so here it goes. I have a rebuilt motor in my rx8 with 7,000 miles on it and I noticed a slower hot start and it was crawling up a hill. uhoh, time for a compression test. Not my first rodeo. Mechanical in my area don't have mazda compression tester tools and I found one who used a traditional tool and got three readings of about 40-50psi at 300rpms for both front and rear rotor.
I am sorely confused. The guy who sold me the remanufactured engine has a 2 year warranty on it with new rotary housings but I would need to pay a mechanic to pull the engine, ship it to him, and he may try to pull a fast one and say I mistreated the engine somehow. I have 2 weeks for him to honor the warranty if he chooses to do so. He keeps pushing me to have mechanic check plugs and change coils. How the hell would the engine turn over with compression so low?!
what could cause the "analog" tool to give such a low reading? Is it accurate and the engine is somehow just chugging along? My last engine had 60 psi on one rotor face and would not start when hot at all.
So confused.
thanks for reading.

Any misfires, CELs?
Did you get the OBD scanned?

Wild thread bump. I love it!
(got a notification in my email and was like wth? lol)
Also, a LOT has happened in my life since I bought this car. In lieu of creating a new thread, as the OP of this one, I’ll just give a quick updated here:
Roughly a year into ownership, I had a seizure while driving home from work. Miraculously did not crash (60+mph on the freeway in the rain). Unable to drive for 6 months due to state law, I ended up having a 2nd seizure 5 months into that initial 6 month restriction, so 11 months total without being able to drive. I also got married during this time.
Luckily I have been seizure free 7+ years now. However, my priorities changed and the dreams I had for this car fell to the wayside and it just became a commuter car. Albeit a very very fun one!
I bought my first house and then lost my job just after the start of covid. New mortgage and no job was...scary. Luckily I had my partner to lean on and I still worked on the side in the sport I grew up in. I leaned full into that job and turned it into my career and everything is well.
I still have the rx8 but it is dead and in storage now, until I have the time/money to get it running again. She lasted 8 years, 1 month, and 14 days with low compression from day one of my ownership (9/2/15). 142k miles on original engine.
These two photos were taken last October, after a good wash, before getting rolled into that there garage and covered for storage. One day she’ll live again. At least that’s the plan! It’s one hell of a car and I don’t regret my risky purchase all those years ago in the slightest! Will not be selling or parting it (unless replacing the seats for ones in better condition, that sort of thing). I’ll keep it in storage forever if I have to/can
RIP for now..

Sorry to hear about your car..
I know I'm probably not the only one to be interested in learning how the dealer handled this..
Please keep us in the loop.............

I have already sent them a polite email saying I believe the service manager conned her out of her 8, we are aware of her situation and trust they'll do the right thing.
I told them this type of situation is why we call them "stealerships" and that manager enforces all the negative stereotypes of service managers taking advantage of naive women.
They sent me a generic reply promising someone would contact me, but they didn't.
If you'd like, send them one also.
I would encourage everyone to do it.
This type of unethical action is unacceptable.
