how many members have spare engines?
So its pretty well known that most people are going to need an engine rebuild or at least replace thier engine at some point if your planning on keeping your car for a while...
ive been looking at engines on ebay just for the hell of it, and 13b engines arent really that expensive. it might be a great idea to buy one and tear it down and do a rebuild.
watched a video on rebuilding and there arent many parts to the motor! i really feel confident i could do this. What size is that giant nut, after you take off the front cover and oil pump and stuff its the biggest one on the engine i believe??

Biggest nut on the engine is the flywheel. 54mm IIRC.
This is not a task to be taken lightly. Do your research, read. Again, read then re read.
Google: 13b-msp engine manual. Start there.
Good luck.

thanks im pretty sure i know what im getting into. thats why id maybe wsant to get a spare engine to wrench on, instead of waiting for mine to eventually blow. get the newone built ,swap it out, rebuild the other one, or sell it to recoup the investment!
i wont be entirely on my own either i have a few friends that are more mechanically inclined than myself that i can have help bail me out if needed.
even if i dont get used engine to rebuild im certainly just gonna get rid of my 8, i love this car ill eventually rebuild this one if/when it needs it! my compression isnt that bad right now and its in better hands than it was.... i should be good for a while maybe next winter...

It's one thing to put an engine together. It's another to get it working...
I wouldn't dissuade you from attempting this at all. But don't think it's gonna be as easy as you think

Hmm… most RX-8 owners who find their way to this forum may need an engine rebuild or replacement. Most owners don't know this forum exists; they have no reason to get online and research their 8.

True. But RX-8 owners told of the need for engine replacement are more likely to find their way to this forum. That's true of any car forum. People with problems and complaints are represented in disproportionate numbers as they seek advice, more information, second opinions and a shoulder to cry on. Owners who are happy - not seeking answers to problems they don't have - are not as well represented here. It's easy to forget that fact.
