I am a new member but have owned my 2004 RX8 for 5 years. Need help and answers

Hello, I am a proud owner of a 2004 RX-8 with only 83,000 miles on the body and only 33,000 miles on the engine. It is a manual and today I noticed it was a bit difficult to shift into the gears. While driving it tonight it shut off while pulling up to a red light. It would not start while in gear but as soon as it was in neutral it fired up. After that I could not shift it into any gears. I had it towed home and upon further inspection the clutch pedal was halfway down and I was able to pop it back up with my hand. So I only have about half a pedal. My fluid reservoir is full and I do not see any leaks inside or out. Has this happened to anyone else on here and does this sound like a master cylinder or a slave cylinder? Like I said before, no leaks and no smell at all. I have been driving manuals for 23 years now. So I am not hard on the clutch or don't ride the clutch at all. Any help or info would be awesome. Thank you in advance!!!

Sounds exactly like slave and master cylinder. Leaks are not apparent when it fails but it obviously has.

There is a common issue and a TSB for the clutch pedal assembly. Welds fail and this is roughly what happens. Your local dealer should be able to replace it .

Could be that as well but seems more likely to be slave/master cylinder if the clutch pedal sinks and doesnt come back up.

That is funny that you say that because when I first looked at the pedals the clutch pedal was almost behind the brake pedal. And not only did it have a lot of play in it up and down, but also a lot of play in it side to side. I will look into that TSB. Thank you so much for the info!!!

Busted clutch pedal for sure. As mentioned, Mazda should replace this for you for free.

I don't think so.
A TSB is not the same as a recall.
They can replace it, but it won't be free.

I thought these were free. I dont have a Mazda dealership here but I've heard they do replace certain things for free. They did extend the replacement under warranty but not sure if it's still in effect. I just welded mine and it works fine.

If the dealer does not cover the replacement of the clutch pedal, you may want to contact Mazda and they may give the authorization for the dealer to replace it at no cost to you. If not, you can replace it with a good used clutch pedal or remove and take it to a machine shop for welding if you do not have a welder.

Another option, which I did, is to buy a new reinforced clutch pedal assembly from BHR.
